UK S13... redtop non VVT. not starting

Just done the above to a friends car,

confict of interest on the internet.. some say plug and play where others say CAS wire needs repinning @ F1 connector (located next to ECU)

"I did mine euro s13 with jdm sr20det redtop. You will need to change f1 plug , re-pin the big plug near the headlight, change thermo sensor ( 1pin ) , make the rpm work ( same shit with transistor resistor or wtf shit ) = congrats , start the engine "

"When I did mine I used the starter/alternator loom from the UK car as the plugs were different on the JDM loom, the UK knock sensor wiring isn't used as that's in the other loom on the JDM car. Apart from that it needed the cranking signal wire moving and the resistor in the speedo wire, that's all. I don't know if there was anything else required that I missed, it didn't make a difference to the car working if there was "

can only one shed any light? cheers

yeap, 1pin needed moving on the F1 plug.

just compared the pinout the F1 plug via google searches

    all starts up fine.

    just need AFM.

not sure it is a redtop, or black top engine as rocker cover is painted....

    anyway of telling?

have already opened ECU to ensure its stock/no chip/board fitted and stock injectors

Loads of ways of telling, the two engines are completely different.

Main way of telling is that the redtop inlet manifold front points upwards, whereas blacktop goes straight ahead parallel to the engine.

There should be a code stamped on the front of the block by the head Gasket if it says 52f (I think) then you have a later blacktop.

I think the head has ribs/fins on the front in between the cams on the later engines, red-top casting is smooth.

just fyi when we installed mine the ecu needed the 1 pin swapping and there's one pin on the brown plug by pass headlights that needs moving across 1 terminal too. again fired straight away then.

we used my old ca alternator loom which worked fine, although I was lead to believe that the 180 blacktops have a very different loom and are not plug and play like the redtops

    The 180sx loom was used.

Looking to be a redtop. Will confirm when I get a chance to go down there :-)
