    Little ends rattle

I never thought I'd start a thread in this section

I've got a rattle on the SR20DE that occurs after 2,500rpm and sounds like it's from the top of the engine. It only does it on light throttle at a constant speed and goes away when accelerating/deceleration. Sounds too high up and not deep enough for a big end rattle.

I've had a look at the cams and they seem ok.

Do little ends ever go in these engines?

No, it would be quite unusual for the little ends to go, they're very reliable, the big ends can give a light rattle-like sound if they are on their way out though, they only get a deep knock when they're totally fubar'd!

could be 'pinking' due to timing being out?

Doubt the timing is the issue of the rattle being that it's on light load only.

    So 3 options:

    Replace bearings - £80
    Another SR20DE - £150
    Or SR20DET - £750

    Or a trusty CA?

I use this old thread, my sr20det is doing something like this since a while, when I accelerate and reach 2500/300 rpm I hear this little rattle which disappear as I let off the throttle, I can throttle on and off and the noise will come and go. I tried to hear from engine bay but I don't or can't hear anything. Please help
30psi have you solved the problem.
(what do you mean with little ends? Italian guy here)
    Thanks

The end of the Conrod that attaches to the piston is the 'little end' and the end that attaches to the crankshaft is the 'big end'

Turned out actually to be big ends. Didn't sound that deep to start with until it got worse soon after I started this thread.

I changed them from underneath and I drive it like a bastard and they haven't got again thankfully.

So I don't need to pm you now, I wanted to know that. Once the upper oil sump/pan is removed as in your picture, is it possible to change the front crank seal and possibly even the rods and pistons? Would it be a good job as a result?

Front crank seal can be changed just by removing front pulley. Sumps can stay on.

You can get rods/pistons out with the crank in, but the head will need to come off.

Ok, at that point the head will need a little skim and the gasket to be replaced, Am I wrong? So removing the crank with pistons and rods isn't possible without taking off the head?

Because if it can be done, at that point I could replace with better pistons and rods.
