    6 Speed gearboxes

Are they really all made of Chocolate? Mine already has started playing up getting it into second and reverse! I don't really know if i should replace the syncros or just put a 5 speed in there!

Reverse in mine is always abit of a bitch, I have to double clutch mine. But think its more due to my clutch being worn.
Second can be abit notchy when cold, but got better when i changed the oil to redline lightweight shock proof! But it's still abit notchy.
Their not made of chocolate but if they are abused they will break!

I think the RX-8 and S2000 lot also have a few tales of dying syncros, so the family of AZ6 boxes isn't the toughest.

I'd always try and fix mine though as I like the ratios (got a spare just in case).

As far as i can tell the 5 speed is not any stronger, just cheaper and easier to source...

Mine went last year and it destroyed everything inside. Although, it was fine before I took it to Santa Pod.

Are the Syncro's easy to source for the boxes?

The gearset is the same as a lexus is 200 box, just slightly different ratios, so you can rebuild the whole box using a donar from the is 200 and a lexus box costs about £50 - £100

Yes mate, afaik 6 speed mazda boxes (RX8 and some MX5's) also share the same internals but cost more to source 2nd hand!!! Also I remember there was another car running these gear internals and looking at John'spost above it would be the S2000 I think the Lexus is the best option though as not many will have been ranted...

IS200 if it cost a 100£. More if it is a full S15.
