You can get an S2000 for that these days (although it'd have more miles on it).

This is the same car as I have and it is in Bath. 77K miles and you could probably get it for 3,500.

I thought of maybe getting one, but after reading the 24 MPG comment, well i get that from my Skyline with a 3.5lt engine

My mk1 was terrible on fuel, I get better economy from a 2.0 16v Golf!
I'm surprised to hear mk2s suffer from keyway problems though, I thought Mazda had learned that lesson with the early mk1..

Thanks for the links Jonny. Jeff, I'm aware of the S2000 but I think what I'd get for that money mostly appears to be of the canine persuasion

That and the fuel consumption/insurance/maintenance would be a lot more. They are far prettier though, IMO of course.
