    Exhaust Manifold Pressure Test- How?

    Hey folks,

    I'm selling my TD06 kit and currently the Manifold is all heatwrapped. I want to test it for cracks/leaks before it goes to its new owner. Anyone got any idea how the hell I can do it?

    find some way to cover all the holes and fill it with air?

    Surely if it had a crack or leak there'd be loads of carbon deposits building up on the wrap making it noticeable.

    I took it off because I thought it was cracked, but have since realised that the gasket between the wastegate and Mani is goosed.

    I thought that would be the best way, I just was trying to think how. I thought either Air or water....

    parafin is better to use than water. less viscosity and wont damage the metal or joints

    if you had a smoke tester that would do it brilliant bit kit but around £500, it burns baby oil like stuff, all you have to do is block the holes and stick this in one and use a halogen lamp, but what about having a good look over it and check for any black carbon at the welds

    Duct tape over all the faces and drop in a few smoke pellets. The whole thing will fill up with smoke so it might find it's way out.

    Cheapo smoke machine:



    The man is optional


    The way I recently found/checked for holes in my cat back was to put a small torch in there and the light shining through was very easy to spot. Even spotting the tiny pin holes from my dodgy welding After trying to fix the holes was easy to see but obviously the wrap will have to come off.

    Immy, the mani will probably be too complex for a torch. Its all funny bends.

    I'm thinking an Air or water option will be the best.

    when i did my intercooler i just filled it with water. To seal it i put a bit of plastic or a latex glove over the end and wrapped in a bit of cloth to give the glove suport and stop it tearing.

    If it's gone anywhere, I'd be looking at where the wastegate pipe joins the collector first

    IOne of the guys in work had a belter idea, seal the ends and put in water, if bubbles appear, then it leaks....

    Even better, seal the ends, put it in a bath and and pressurise with air.

    EDIT: Just realised that's what you meant by "put in water". I thought you meant "put water in it"

    Putting it in water will not help you as the wrap will trap air and there will be bubbles everywhere

    You could create some flat solid flanges from strips of rubber and wood then bolt them together to create a seal.

    Then on the chosen end create a way to pressurise the manifold with air, pump it up to 10psi and leave it for 10 minutes to see if it has lost any pressure.
