S14 SILVIA... non cat for mot surely... import right?

So, guy that mots my car says it needs a cat...

I thought it wouldnt due to being an import so should be put thought as a Silvia s14, not a UK 200sx s14?

When was it built? The non cat/3.5% CO import thing is only relevant for imported cars pre 1994, or something like that. I know my FD only just gets away with it and that's a '94.

I'm guessing that as yours is a Kouki is was after this.

Bummer. I thought someone said S15 didn't need it due to being an import...

But ill just dig it out the shed and chuck it in to keep the peace.

In my experience it depends on what MOT tester you get... I had my '93 180sx fail a couple of years back for not having a cat

Needless to say, after a 20 min argument with the tester followed by a spirited leaving of his premises, I did not ever return there for work. Annoyingly, the garage was supposed to be a Jap import specialist. Next MOT it sailed through.

I honestly just think some MOT testers interpret the rules differently

I think its to do with the availability of the emission readings. As s14s were sold in the uk, testers have the relevant readings whereas something like the s15 or an mr2 turbo that wasnt sold in the uk doesnt, so the testers dont have anything to go off.

You need to find a decent tester ideally!..

My r33 passed with no cat M reg face lift so 1996?
I thought it was imports are thrown through the none cat test as our test machines don't list the specific data for that model to test against, whereas an s14 is a uk car so they would just compare with that, unless you can find prove that the emissions on the jdm model differ to the uk model

Pretty sure they do now have emissions for imports. My 1996 R33 GTR wont pass on emissions.

It's if the car is made before April 1995 or something. Was reading it not long ago on direct gov

Cars before 1993 get an easy test.
Cars 1993-1995 get an easy test if there are no figures available for them (has to be sumitted by the manufacturer)
Post-1995 get a relatively easy test if no figures are available.

A silvia S14 will be treated the same as a UK s14 as it has same chassis number and same engine.

S13s didn't ever get figures submitted so late UK cars and imports get an easy test until 1995. Post-1995 JDM cars get a relatively easy test.

There is a new rule that says anything with a CAT has to have one fitted but I'm pretty sure that it is not being applied retrospectively.

    I've got a 1992 S13 and a 1993 S13 that have passed without CATs.

im pretty sure most import cars are only subject to a base idle test on the emmisions for mot's

Apart from when its got 4wheel steering its then changed to cs14.
