Vauxhall Astra - wipers not parking

We have a 2000 X-reg Astra at work. It's wipers have started parking in random positions on the screen.

how is the parking controlled on an Astra? Via the motor, or a relay or similar?

A new motor, fitted, is £235 so I don't want to do that if it's controlled somehow else.

    Thanks,

one of the contacts inside the wiper motor has worn out.
it is fairly easy to fix you need a small strip of copper from the back of an old house plug or i used a bit of wire from some twin and earth i had laying around.

    remove the wiper arms
    remove the plastic scuttle panel
unplug the wiper motor. the plug is near the BMC reservoir
    undo the linkage bolts
the wiper motor is bolted to some big random silver plate undo the bolts inside the scuttle panel and it all lifts out.

looking at the motor you want to drill out the rivets that hold the cover over the big cog and worm gear. remove the small torx bolts then just grind the heads off if you dont like drilling stuff.
once you are inside you will see a metal disc on the back of the big cog and 2 fingers/prongs that touch the disc.
they should both be the same length.
get your bit of copper wire bend it into a tight 'U'shape and slide it onto the worn down contact so it clamps it in the middle.
use a soldering iron to solder it on!
check the metal disc on the cog hasnt worn away
slap some grease inside it and screw the plate back on

reassembly is the opposite of taking it to bits. temporarily put the wipers on with out the scuttle then have fun working out where to put the wiper linkage bits back on.

    Cheers.

I know it was something similar on my Mk2 Fiesta. Copper ring with a gap in it. But didn't know if Vauxhall did something different.

its normally one of the fingers that touch the ring that gets worn out. just bodge it so its the same length.

    Thanks for your info George.

I've already been multiply persuaded the fault is within the motor, but cost has come down from £250 to £150.
    Being done this week.

It would be nice if it was a cheap relay doing it. I'll know in a few days.

Theres a guide how to fix it here.

I did in on the girlfriends car last year, it was fairly easy. Hardest thing was getting the wiper arms off - they were rusted solid.
I used a bit of copper off an old rc car battery box for the new electrode! Cost me nothing to fix .
