    A Dying Breed?

With the current economic climate they say there is no such thing anymore as a 'job for life'. Redundancys left right and centre plus people seem more willing to chop and change jobs in order to get more money or just be happier.

    Except me

Last month signified 19 years service for the blue oval which is more than half my life Joined at 18 after a year at college, 4 year apprenticeship being a mech/elec, 1 year at Aveley Pilot plant (thats pilot as in prototype, not flying ) doing prototype bodys (worked on the Puma, Cougar and Courier projects) then to Dunton, firstly spending 5 years build prototype engines (Transit and Mondeo TDCi engines, TDV6 and V8 used in JLR and PSA plus other stuff like a few Jag SC V8s) and then onto my current job which i have been doing for 9 years now.

And to be honest although i do fancy a change job wise i cant ever see myself working for anyone else mainly because there is no way i could find a job that pays so well (well unless i became a tube driver )

So am I an endangered species how many other people have done more than 10 years service with one company?

Good effort there Mark, you're right, that's not a common story these days

For lowly unqualified sales minions like myself the only way to get paid more is to move onwards and upwards, so that tends to be what happens. A couple of years here, a couple there, a little step upwards each time.

That said the company is going through a serious bad patch and as of this week i'm down to 3 days/ week. Hoping things get better soon

I'm only 24, so I'm not in a position to be able to claim 20 years of service to one employer!

My Dad did the whole "climb the ranks" thing though; he joined BT as a telephone cable installer and left as a Director

not even close to that time

Every year I am up for redundancy OR the company I work for changes hands, in the last year and a half I have worked for 3 different companies ..... yet still sit in the same seat in the same office

I have never experienced a Job for 2 years, let alone for life

Hope you haven't put the jinx on it, Mark.

I did fifteen years with my last company - they treated me well and I enjoyed it. So last year, in the teeth of a recession I gave it up and moved from London to one of the worst areas in Britain for unemployment (went to uni for a year to do a full-time MBA). Sometimes you need to shake your life up and live a little dangerously - If I hadn't left when I did, I would have ended up as one of those old gits who is counting down to retirement.

Longest I've been in one job is just under 3 years, but got made redundant from there.

Have been at my current place for almost 2.5 years now, but have changed roles once and we've also changed companies in that time.

Theres not really any chance of going any further with this company without moving elsewhere in the country and there is no likelihood of a payrise anytime in the forseeable future, also they have announced the closure of our site within the next 3-4 years so I'm currently looking for other jobs.

Well I dunno if this totally counts but I've sorta been working in my current job since I was 13 (weekends holidays etc) and apart from a few months after I feel out with the manager I'm still here and full time employment at 22.5 years old
