Is this an sr related problem? Got a standard mani with t28 on my ca and drift days etc. This is with some old gaskets, missing a manifold to head nut, and no locking tabs. After drifting, very hard driving and abuse when changing my turbo last week after 7k of abuse there were still no blows or anything loose??

It's not a problem at all if you do it right the first time !

Aren't aftermarket manifolds pretty rare for CAs?

Personally I think a lot of the problems are due to crappy studs.

Over 2 years, over 20 drift days plus plenty of other stuff... No flexi, low car etc

Never once done a gasket... Always just checked locking tabs are in place!

    What manifold are you using?

Theres nothing wrong with welding manifold and turbo together. All its doing is replicating what a lot of modern turbo cars have with manifold and exhaust housing in one piece. As said earlier, its hardly a big issue to cut the weld open if the turbo needs changing.

once mine is finished ill certainly be spot welding it shut after tightening everything up lol spot welding makes sense to me and its hardly difficult to grind it all off after for wateva reason.

Im currently not running a gasket between the mani and turbo and couldnt be working better!

I didnt even get them skimmed, just applied the thinness film of exhaust paste, jobs a good'un, no blowing!

Apparently plenty of cars come from the factory without gaskets...

    540bhp SR

    mixed driving really...eg

400+ mile round trips of steady away and fast paced driving,

150+ mile drive to APT for a days hard mapping an then back, more than a few times.

a few TOTB comps ( very hard all day driving, handling, drag, top speed all in one day back to back)

    various track days

    Lots of fast road driving

And day to day slow paced stuff like going to tescos.

dont want to be using putty between manifold and turbo, if it breaks lose it will only get sucked through the turbo.

turbo to elbow isnt an issue, but you still dont want to use putty. a proper layered gasket will compensate for non-flat surfaces.

Best thing ive heard of doing is small spot welds on studs and nuts once tightened and assembled.

if your gunna weld it, might as well take it off to get both mating surfaces clean/flat, and if you got it ff, why not just put a gasket on it?

Lol I assure you they were tight. Never had bother when it was standard manifold on any of my 5 s-bodys and when I fitted the s/s manifold to this car it was fine for about 10'000miles then after that refitted new gaskets etc and they have been going quicker ever since. The only thing I can think is once the flange is distorted once it will never be the same.
I currently have the same issue with my manifold to head flange. It kept leaking after changing new gaskets. Turned out the weld had cracked round the 4th port due to the flange warping with the heat. I sat the manifold on my flat table at work at the start of the week and u can see a 1mm gap where the 4th cylinder is so as I've been tightening up number 4 (about 5 times due to turbo to manifold gasket going) it was putting extra strain on that weld as it wasn't mating with the head there.
There is less heat there than at the turbo flange so you can imagine the shape that's in.
