I love the watch, & I love the brand, (tell myself that I don't usually fall for marketing spin like this) but have come to the conclusion that I really only made the decision, to satisfy a show-off need I'd normally take the piss out of if any one else did the same.

I don't trust myself to wear it on a night out involving a Budweiser or two, as I've got a history of waking up under a bush in the early morning with something of value gone. The only benefit of rarely wearing it, is the watch remains like spanking new, but apart from satisfying the 'man need' to own one, it seems a poor decision. The fact it's now is worth something like 3 times what I blagged it for, (purely by chance, not skill of judgement) doesn't stop me from feeling like a bit of a cock for giving in to the desire to own one.

Any one else, aside from the limitation that most non rapper or 'Only Way Is Esseks' geezers can't bling up their appearance like a female can with sparkly baubles, feel a bit showy for wearing a posh watch? Truth is, I feel it's a bit 'tacky' to buy/wear this sort of 'look at me gear'? Perhaps I'm too socialist without the Champaign?

Haven't sold it on to date, so probably got my (personal) answer...

Hmm, Probs says more about my character than it does about the watch.
Shuffles off to polish it. It's the watch I'm polishing I should make clear!

Try working in the motor trade, everywhere I look there's a Rolex/Breitling/Tag Heuer/Omega on someone's wrist

I only really wear mine to work once or twice a week at most but do wear it on nights out and wore it every day on holiday there. I'd wear it more often at work but I can see the bottom of the clasp getting very scratched very quickly from typing, and taking it off everytime would be a pain in the tits!

There are plenty of non-high street options. I have 13 watches and only 1 is of the above. Breitling Superocean Heritage 44 in Blue which I just fell in love with. I do like the Kermit Sub, but I will get a Steinhart instead. This week I am wearing a numbered limited edition watch of 50. Even high street limited editions are in the 1000's.

I have never seen anyone with one of my watches on. Exclusivity for me is important, not 'look at me'.

Anyway back on track, Buying a 30 year old watch will be hit and miss. Factor in a service. but bear in mind some parts may not be available on older watches. However if you go for an ETA movement watch they should be parts should be available. Prices will vary hugely depending on brand. So knowing budget would be useful.

    Suggestions
    - Go for something off the wall Like Girard Perregaux Gyromatic (worlds first hi beat 36000vph) iconic and ground breaking in its day. Also the GP Seahawk is a nice piece. (GP is the second oldest manufacturer of watches)
    - Zenith might also be a winner - especially the Chronograph with the El Primero movement - another Iconic one.
    - Omega Speedmaster 'Moon watch' yet another Iconic watch

So I finally bit the bullet and committed to something.

Bought me a u-boat 50mm flightdeck. Black PVD and black leather strap.

I am thinking of buying an Alpha just so that I have something non black too for variety purposes but we'll see

This is how a 50mm watch would look on my wrist...

quite like that, it has a Bell and Ross kind of feel to the dial, but the deal breaker for me is the canteen crown

Not that it matters now, but I had a Breitling bought for me for my 21st, many years ago now, never come off my wrist since except to have it serviced and when the strap broke, wear it swimming pool or sea and put a sweat band round it if playing sports. Not one person has ever made a remark about the watch no one seems to notice it as I too was a bit oh thats a bit posh!

Best watched ive had though expensive to fix but the broken strap was like $300 and service aint cheap but before this I was buying a watch a year roughly as I would scratch to bits or or brack it somehow. This was a gift that has lasted years of abuse and kept exceptional time. Done what it said really.

Gah well it's all gone wrong anyway. Received it this morning - opened the packaging to find a rather worse for wear card based box inside. Opened that to find the presentation case. The u-boat packing paper inside had been screwed up and pushed back in any old how. The cleaning cloth strewn into the corner of the box the watch itself sitting diagonally across the box not secured by its tabs and the warranty card / certificate and owners manual missing

Rang them and asked wtf - apparently they'll send me a warranty card. Umm, it's supposed to have the serial number on it.

Returned it immediately and am now facing up to disappointment.

The best of it is their returns policy I'd via Connect+.... so some pikey newsagent in town is now holding a box worth a few quid, and all I have to show is a small little till receipt with a tracking number on it. nervous much?

That's sucked the joy out of that then. It's a Pi55er when others can't organise a P. U. I. A. Brewery. Have to wonder far to often as to how some business exist from day to day.

Offering a replacement or have you got to start all over again?

    Paid by debit card.

They said to send it back then they'd arrange a replacement. I have a feeling they'll forget and just issue a refund. At which point no doubt I could re-order and take my chances as to whether I get exactly the same one back complete with the note inside the box telling them everything that's wrong with it.

    Pissed off

That would be an awesome phone call to customer services

Hello I've just received my new watch, along with a twenty point document detailing everything that is wrong with it.
    Can you please advise??

    The Watch Hut

To be fair they're very apologetic but surely you don't send something like that out without checking its contents are all present and correct and in good order first

You'd expect it when they're charging over 2 grand for the bugger.

Smacks of selling customer returns, repairs and display stuff as new. Their site doesn't say anything about watches being new and sealed, only that they're genuine and under warranty.

Plenty of dodgy reviews here: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.thewatchhut.co.uk
