OK watch people. I'm desperately seeking a nice birth year watch (1981), something like an Omega or Longines etc Other than ebay, where's the best place to look?
Was thinking about this thread the other day... I've seen so many broken Rolex/Omega/Breitling/etc fakes on eBay now I honestly say they'll only last a couple of years if you're lucky.
Specialist forums probably, although owners can be equally optimistic on price. Local auction houses as well but those watches are usually pretty rough.

At that age, any wind-up or automatic will need a service, so budget £200+ for that. Beware any seller that claims a watch has been "recently serviced" and can't show a receipt, they're lying.
Big names like Omega, Longines, Breitling have quite a lot of scene tax and when I think of early 80s Swiss watches I can only think of military/dive watches like Porsche Design and Heuer.

Late 70s and early 80s is my era but I stick to quartz as they're a hell of a lot more reliable and easy to work on. I've bought 20 watches in the last year and some of my favourites only cost a tenner off of eBay

They seem to cater for the London yuppie market as their prices are about double what you'd pay to buy the same watch at auction and get it serviced/restored by an independant.
Swatch have now announced they are cutting off ALL parts supply (inc Omega, Tissot, Longines) from 2016 so they and their official dealers (like this one) can get stuffed

I got my Seamaster from Chronomaster. Communication was good but the watch wasn't the one advertised/pictured, it's a few years older than what I thought I was getting. Did offer to refund me or send me a few quid back as it was supposedly a mix up with adverts, no warranty but they were a good chunk cheaper than Watchfinder so I ended up keeping it.
I 'treated' myself to a 2 month old Breitling Chrono (small face) a couple of years ago on the basis it was a (genuine) bargain, but truth is I've worn it less than 10ish times, so on that basis it was one of the poorest buys I've ever made. I love the watch, & I love the brand, (tell myself that I don't usually fall for marketing spin like this) but have come to the conclusion that I really only made the decision, to satisfy a show-off need I'd normally take the piss out of if any one else did the same.
I don't trust myself to wear it on a night out involving a Budweiser or two, as I've got a history of waking up under a bush in the early morning with something of value gone. The only benefit of rarely wearing it, is the watch remains like spanking new, but apart from satisfying the 'man need' to own one, it seems a poor decision. The fact it's now is worth something like 3 times what I blagged it for, (purely by chance, not skill of judgement) doesn't stop me from feeling like a bit of a cock for giving in to the desire to own one.
Any one else, aside from the limitation that most non rapper or 'Only Way Is Esseks' geezers can't bling up their appearance like a female can with sparkly baubles, feel a bit showy for wearing a posh watch? Truth is, I feel it's a bit 'tacky' to buy/wear this sort of 'look at me gear'? Perhaps I'm too socialist without the Champaign?
Haven't sold it on to date, so probably got my (personal) answer...
Hmm, Probs says more about my character than it does about the watch.
