According to my mate who gets all the fakes, ETA also realised that they were selling their movements to a lot of dodgy watchmakers who were using them to build copies of their own brand watches (Omega etc) and other high end watches that also use ETA movements (most of them!) - so they restricted the supply a lot. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the 'ETA' movements in fakes are also fake!

It specifies whether it's eta or copied eta on that website BTW, can't find any eta just now but they were on there. ETA is available in cheap normal watches too, not just the expensive stuff. Is it not swatch that make them anyway, it's all just markup with the expensive stuff imo.

No reason not to get the real deal though, they don't seem to loose much money anyway.

    When I see 4k for a watch I just think, that's a e36 M3, there's no comparison to me.

Incidently looks like we pay about double the price of the states for tags etc, worth a cheap flight. Or a well posted item, probs get the real ones for a similar price to a good fake?

try out watch auctions as well... you can get amazing deals there!

My mate's dad bought a solid gold breitling for about 9k... turns out it's worth almost double that and it is as new!

Yeah, but you are buying a fake product afterall - it says Omega on the front, cos it says ETA inside doesn't mean it's real!

Yeah - but a £4K M3 will be worth £3K next year, and scrap in 10 years. A decent watch will either never lose value or appreciate. If you look at the price of something mainstream like a Rolex Submariner - 10 years ago you could buy one new for about £3K. If you bought it then, kept it in reasonable condition you could probably sell it for £3.5-4K today. They go for between £4-5K via specialist dealers, which isn't that much less than the RRP...

I guess it depends on what kind of watch you are looking for - something heavy duty like a divers watch will take a load of abuse as they are stainless steel with crystal glass so don't scratch easily. If it's a dress watch then you are prob better off either keeping it for 'best' or getting something cheaper to wear everyday.

If you want one for the 'look' without the cost, get a replica and don't care if it gets trashed

Id like the vintage look as a more daily watch. Something smart casual.

Where as id like the seamaster or planet ocean for more special occasions and smart events

Yes but my point is he declares most as fake eta and a few as actual eta internals, he'd just say they were all actual eta if that was his game. I'm not going to debate the quality of the insides of those watches any though because I wouldn't know a real eta mechanism if it bit my genitals off.

However my point about the expensive watches is that my brain can't put a watch next to a car in actual value to me. The enjoyment I get out of a good car is beyond what a watch can offer. That's not to say this thread hasn't got me looking at watches again, I don't even need one, thanks Arry......

Absolutely. I already have a gold Omega Constellation, but I never wear it because I'm too scared that I'll lose it.... considering it's value - there would be no point me getting a 3 - 5 K watch as I'd never wear that either..

I like the Planet Ocean Style and wouldn't mind wearing it at $300.. at the end of the day, watches should be worn.. just like cars should be driven

Not the best analogy, but you know what I mean

Lads, anything in particular to watch out for with these higher quality reps to identify them from a crapper one? Specifically a Rolex Submariner?

Got chatting to a lad in work today who has a new one he's wanting to sell on, will hopefully get a look next week. Showed me the Daytona rep he had on (from the same place) which did seem good quality to me, but then I've never held a real Daytona

For Submariners there's loads of good Swiss/Japanese "homages" with decent movements. Full-on fakes will be Chinese-made garbage.

Stick a good one on a Nato strap (as per Sean Connery in Goldfinger/Thunderball) and people will have to get close to notice the difference:

There's a guy on the RWG forum who does the best Rolex reps around (apparently) in his 'for sale' threads he puts down lots of info to show why his watches are such good reps.
Maybe read through that and keep it in mind when you look at your mates watch.

Also ask your mate how much he paid, the really good reps are over $500 a piece new.

Let me know asht as im considering a planet ocean or seamaster from there. If its good quality (as in feels like a premium watch) and seems to function reliably ill most likely get one myself

Cheers, was looking at the Steinhart site last night and there's a couple of really nice ones. Very tempted, but not into the nato strap - I'm a big fan of bracelets.

Thanks mate, will check that out. The more I think about it though the more I reckon I should just put the cash towards a nice used Seamaster, it's what I keep coming back to and has the bonus of still being worth a few quid in a few years if I ever need to get rid.

While I'm here, Tag Aquaracer - in the same league as a Seamaster, or just not comparable? They look quite nice and are a bit cheaper used by the looks of things.

And when everyone comments on it and asks you if it's real, you don't have to either lie or admit it's a fake. Those Steinhart's do look decent though, I'm half tempted to get one too

I bought my missus an Aquaracer (a quartz one, not an auto) as a present a few years back - within 2-3 years (just outside the warranty) it went wrong and had to be sent back to Tag. IIRC it was about £300 to get it fixed. One of my mates bought one for his missus as well, it went wrong too...
