I left my job in the middle of a pandemic and one of my customers did a virtual leaving drinks for me which was nice but they said they'd have to follow it up by taking me out once we were back in town. Of course, that hasn't happened, so in the post this week I received a little surprise.

    It's a Commie watch

The best of the breed, so to speak, having a swan neck regulator and sapphire glass. It's not an expensive piece but it was really thoughtful of them as we'd been talking about affordable mechanical watches and this was one of the watches I'd mentioned to them.

Nice to have something a bit different.

I'm not sure why, but I really like that (plus that was very nice of them).

    I really like that.

We shouldn’t be snobbish about “commie watches” the number 1 watch brand sold in the UK has it’s origins in the USSR (Sekonda)

There are also some really nice watches that came out of East Germany

    Now for a “Dream Watch”

I seriously like this Jacob & Co. simply because it is called a “Twin Turbo”

    Twin Tri Axis Tourbillons

    Only £535,000

On the subject of Tourbillons, check this out!

    https://caviar.global/caviar-iphone-...-diamond-gold/

Why would you need a wind up Tourbillon clock on the back of a phone, when the phones GPS clock is more accurate?

Keep looking at watches, I'm pretty sure I will take the plunge on my first proper timepiece early next year....

I'm thinking it will lost likely be a longines hydroconquest in the grey finish with a stainless bracelet.

Really impressed with my mates longines master collection moonphase, to my eye and feel its equal to omega/breitling etc in quality feel, but not as pricey - so I won't cry AS hard if I bust it

I like Longines generally but there is just one thing that bugs m about their non-diver watches.... WR. They all seem to be 3bar only which is a bit naff. My B&M is 5bar and that's the minimum I'd want to go with on an expensive watch (he says as his IWC sits in its box at 3bar). The Hydroconquest is of course a diver so you won't have that bother - but....spanner in works..... for less money......

    A genuine super-compressor

With less WR than the Longines But still, open case back and cool SC features +/- cooler?

To be fair 3bar is 20 meters. The only way one of my watches would end up that deep in water would be if I dropped it in the sea...

In theory but not really ever in practice it would seem.

In real life how tough is sapphire glass?

This is my current every day watch:

As you can see has picked up a lot of damage to the crystal, I take it off if I know I'm about to put my hand somewhere rough, but every now and then end up reaching through cable ducts or pulling kit off vans and clunking the watch against something hard...

If I go for a good watch I'd like to actually wear it, but if its likely to scratch up like this I'd leave it at home

I've not a scratch on any of my sapphire crystal glassed watches but I'm a desk dweller and don't wear a watch when I'm messing on motors so.

More likely to scratch an AR coating than the sapphire

Been a while since I wore anything really given our current state sponsored incarceration, but this weekend I thought balls to it
