    Who's in to Real Ale?

So went to the Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court today and suddenly realised I really enjoy a good English stout...... nothing like the crap Ireland gives us... but such gems like Chocolate Marble etc

Also enjoyed many others there, however couldn't drink Mighty Oak or Maldon Brewing Company out of principal because they are literally next door to where I live but

    So list favourites

    Woodforde's Wherry

Bit of a philistine re the subject as I am happiest drinking flavourless stuff like Bud or Fosters, but I do have a liking for Woodforde's Wherry.

As a beer, this is top of my list.

Can't beat a good (has to be a reliable source) pint of Cameron's Trophy Special....nom nom

It used to be brewed just 4 miles from here but now the Castle Eden brewery has gone its brewed a few miles further down the coast in a big plant and its not as good. Still pretty awesome though. However, the local home brewers have variations of the Castle Eden recipe and methodology to make truly fantastic ales . Some of the homebrewed Trophy and Strongarm Ruby's are absolutely to die for straight from the keg .

I love real ale which is not too hoppy and a little sweet:
    Current Favs:

    Golden:
    Landlord - Timothy Taylor
    Wiltshire Gold - Arkells

    Darker/Ruby:
Winter Warmer - Youngs (all of Youngs real ale is excellent)
    Hobgoblin - Wychwood

Real ales vary widely, I think many people try one that they hate and never go back, but if they picked wiser they would love them.

Ask if you can have a free tiny taster when you go in the pub, stops you making a bad choice.

For instance I quite like the taste of London Pride but it dries my mouth out really badly, so I avoid it.

Chocolate Marble sounds great will look out for that one.

Bath Ales do some good ones - Gem particularly.

Generally I just go into the pub and pick the guest ale with the silliest name though

went to a restaurant recently in Ramsbottom called the Fishermans' retreat and they had their own golden ale on - Blond Bitch

    It was really good

I know this might get me lynched by some of the more serious ale drinkers but I do like a few of the more commonly available stouts, Oyster Stout particularly.

Can't go wrong with a good Stout or Porter Meantime London Porter in the big champagne style bottles is superb

Shame the most well known Stout is probably the crappiest out there and whoever invented Guiness Extra Cold deserves a smack in the chops

If you like dark beers, Old Peculiar is worth a try

I love Old Peculiar, it has a lovely richness without being heavy.
London Porter is great, bought it for making a beer gravy and just loved drinking it. Much better than over-hyped Guinness.

I totally agree - with real ale the most well known beers seem to be the most bland.

Doombar and barnowl are pretty much the only ones I drink. Doombar is my favorite out of the two by far though

I do this. goddards brewery on the Island has some good ones. Anti Freeze and Fuggle dee dum spring to mind.

It is getting a little spooky, i sometimes read your posts Pete and think "did i write that?"

Generally i prefer lighter coloured ales around 4-6% anything much stronger and i find them a bit too treacle like.

Mentioned here already, but I'm adding my +1 to Timothy Taylors Landlord and Coniston Bluebird.

Being from MK it would be rude not to mention the Concrete Cow brewery too, I like their Midsummer Ale.

I was in Barbecoa the other day near St Paul's and I tried a Brew Dog IPA that was very very good.

I do love a nice cask ale. Current faves are Doom Bar, Black Sheep, Brains, London Pride and Marstons Pedigree. Nice geographical mix.

Whatever the brewery I tend to prefer the lower alcohol session bitters to the fancy, stronger stuff.

    It's all great

I'm spoilt for choice living a stones throw from Ossett Brewery. They own loads of pubs round here, obviously serving their own ales but usually a good selection of guest beers. Hits me straight between the eyes though
