    Steering rack width

    Hi

Does anyone know of (or can measure) the width of an S13 rack?

I'm interested to know the width from track rod end to end and also the width at the inner track rod joint to joint.

    Cheers

I can get under the car tonight.

Not sure what the second measurement you want is though

Also, you have realised that they are adjustable so the length can vary and what you will get is the length for a normal road setup (if you get the measurement from my car).

Yeah the length may vary a bit but thats ok. If you were to follow the track rod away from the hub, inside the rubber boot is a ball joint.

Yep. It screws into rack using a flat block that takes a 30mm spanner (IIRC).

Do you want the measurement between the flat block that is just inwards of the ball joint on each side ?

EDIT: And do you want mm or inches ?

Yeah do it on the flat block. I didn't use a 30mm spanner when I changed mine, I manned them off and on with stilsons.

    Inches pls

    I fail

Its not as easy as I was hoping and really requires the car to be off the ground.

How quickly do you need to know ? I can get it up on the jack at the weekend.

Don't go out of your way jacking the car up unless you're already planning to do that. See if Mel can get to see a rack (steering type not a fun type) at the weekend

I've got an S14 rack and S13 rack sitting on the workshop floor, what measurements do you need?

    2 widths.

From complete end to end (i.e. where the track rod end bolt is)
Inner width from beginning of track rod ball joint that screws in to end of rack (i.e. from the ball joints as per below)

Or just measure the whole track rod/end length and I can deduct that from the total width.

    Cheers

S13 180sx (non hicas) and S14 racks are the same lenth, infact they look identical. FSM shows S13, S14, S15 (all non hicas) to have the same steering ratio, so id say it's safe to say the racks are the same. Hicas have quicker racks (17 ish:1 compared to 14ish:1)

Im sure I messured a 10mm difference but can't remember if that was each side or total rod end to rod end. Hazy memory. All the difference came from rod lenth. Rack side thread is the same, rod end side is different.

So er, can't answer your questions lol but I guess the above may help you.

S14 will be 10mm longer overall as it has 10mm wider track.

Can't easily get to the one I have off, it's in a garage 4 miles away, on a subframe, with engine, wedged rack end first under the offside of a car on axle stands. And there is a rear subframe in the way under the front of the car on stands. I would have to jack the rear subframe on scissor jacks to get a trolley jack under it. Then haul it out.

Well its taken so long that I forgot you wanted it in inches but get a calculator

The outer rack is 490mm across between the exit points for the inner steering rods (or whatever they are called).

Those steering rods protrude by 58mm each side (edge of the outer rack to the tab washers).

The blocks that are locked by the tab washers are 35mm further each from the tab washer.

Did you want the track rods themselves measured ?
