    Household waste vehicle permit scheme!?

Any one else's council started this crap?

Dad took a load of bits to the dump yesterday from the house, and because he owns a Citroen Berlingo van was turned away at the entrance as he didn't have a permit. Eh?? Apparently, if you own a van or small trailer etc, you need to have a permit to dump your own NON-commercial waste

    Info here: http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=26818

So, applied today, will take 14 days. Yes, it's free, but what a waste of time. Can only do 12 trips a year (probably do nowhere near that many anyway), and I can't see how a small thing in the window of a van will make any difference whatsoever!? Dad never dumps his commercial waste there anyway, obviously, but how can a card in the window make any difference!?

Anyone else own a van and had similar issues? Interesting on the link that if you owned a bit van, you can't go the tip at all anymore

Oh, rock up in a big estate with the SAME waste, and it's totally fine, in you come son, no permit required...

A lot of Councils have been running it for ages unfortunately
In our district (Warwick DC) You can't take 'proper' vans to the tip, full stop. 'Car derived vans' can be used only if they are the household's only vehicle (and they reserve the right to contact the DVLA to check).

In Coventry, you can get a permit up to 8 times in a year for a van, but you have to book it in and give them your address etc.

My mate's having a big ballache with it as he want s a Bedford Rascal, but him and his wife also have a Megane convertible - which you can fit naff all in. However, he wouldn't be able to take the Rascy to the local tip

I got reprimanded as we rocked up in his mate's transt van, and tried to palm off a load of stuff to the recycling shop - the stuff they didn't want I 'discretely' walked into the tip - I was reprimanded and escorted off the tip premises

Yep, some round here are cool, some wont take signwritten vans, others wont take vans at all. Its bit pants really.

it is a bit odd, but its the same across the country. when my Old man uses his van to dump his own stuff, they never stamp the card.

they make alot of money from commercial waste

The van isn't the households only vehicle, but I didn't see that mentioned when I read through so hopefully thats ok.

I mean, SERIOUSLY, is dad going to fill up mothers 307 with garden waste, or put it in the back of his work van!?

I understand totally why it exists, I just think it's very pointless.

This, and the absurd insurance cost of his van this year, is making him seriously think about getting a big estate for the odd job he does

Who? Councils? They really don't By the time they've paid for the bins and recycling cntainers people keep 'losing', the cost of cleaning up fly tipping, the cost of the contracts with the recycling companies, the cost of keeping the tips open, etc etc, there's usually very little left over.

That's the thing - I can see why it's in place, as it would save businesses a shedload dumping stuff at the tip, but cost the council loads, but on the flipside it just encourages fly tipping - I can't see a decent solution

The annoying thing is, he's a plumber, he has basically zero commercial waste. Any piping he rips out is either reused or sold for scrap, but they don't bother to think about that.

EDIT: a slightly pointless statement. But it's the whole 'assuming' that because you have a vehicle with 2 panes of glass missing, you must be dumping your commerical waste, however matey in his ovlov with the 2 panes of glass doesn't even get a glance..

The site operator, who 60% of the time is not the council, but they do still make a decent wedge from it.

you would be shocked to see the amount of money there is in the Waste industry, especially when a private contractor/operator is invloved.

    Ah yep, cool
I was just pointing that councils do not make much money (if any) from waste disposal/management - it pretty much all goes straight into the pockets of external contractors

The Council could make money if the thought about what they are doing. the amount of money Councils waste in err Waste Management is amazing.

i work for a Waste Management Consultancy, and i get to see all parts of it from all sides. and the Councils are the worst. they have no coordination between departments often doubling up in people/services, they have no clue in what they are doing, and the think that but just blindly chucking Millions of tax payers money at it, the problems will solve themselves.

but that can be seaid about 99% of the Public Sector.

I third this, my friend works for the council and has been around a couple of departments.

Benefits was the worst by a mile (can you believe it )

They employ teams of people on permanent contracts to do the work one computer with a database could do

To top it off they often end up loosing all the paperwork, and redoing it all

the way its been for ages around here,

if you have a van or trailer i think you have to call up and book first or summat, however i think on a tuesday afternoon they have to accept you, but they aint happy about it. My bro check with the council and then went up. The guys at the dump gave him jip, but he challenged them and was right.

    May be similar for you?

waste disposal is far to expensive. It costs about £100 per ton at my local tip if its commercial waste and that was a year ago so its prob more now as it goes up every year.
The thing that used to piss me of the most was the tipping charge was about £38 ish per tonne and landfill tax was over £40 per tonne.
And then on top of that you have to drive over the tip face which will give you a puncture 40% of the time.

Been like it round these parts for donkeys years

You have to get a council chap out to inspect the waste and issue you with an official permit.

Does not cost anything but it's not easy to get the visit

......................and they wonder why they have fly tipping problems -

just dump the stuff at the side of the road with a note pinned to it saying the council policy has forced this on you - just watch for CCTV and don't leave any traceable bits such as bills, letterheads, receipts etc.

of course I wouldn't condone such activity
