    Angry Smoking

    Hi there,

I just fitted a straight trough exhaust on and it now seems to smoke a little at times. But never used to with the standard exhaust.

Any ideas on the problem? Hoping it's not a new turbo job

Any ideas on a temporary fix would be greatly appreciated as I'm broke at the moment

    Cheers,
    Alex.

What colour smoke? Black is fuel, blue is oil and White is water. If it's fuel I wouldn't worry as most seem to over fuel a bit to avoid det.

What ecu / chip you running?

And when does it smoke? Idle? When on full boost ? Or the run down?

lack of back pressure with new exhaust = weak turbo seals....i think.

x2, most common reason, search one way valve trick.

Blue smoke and normally on the overrun. Not much on idle.

Standard ecu etc, just brought the car completely standard so just has the exhaust at the moment.

One way valve? I will have a look cheers.

    Thanks for the replies

one of two things, oil seals on turbo are weak and reduced back pressure has highlighted this, or you have gunk in the exhaust you fitted and need to burn it out of there.

run it for a bit and see if it goes, if not, you can fit a one way valve to the breahters to help reduce this

the one way valve trick really is no good, it prevents the engine from breathing ... better fit a catch tank. Either pick an expensive or cheap one on ebay, or just reuse an aluminium beer can. You just need to block the oil breather connection on the intake (just before the turbo) and on the 1-way valve on the back of the intake manifold. Then connect remaining tubes to the can. Job done.

Anyway, either you still have gunk in your exhaust, or your turbo is on the way out. Most of the time it is the old T25 ending its life... prepare to get a cheap T28. Or install your oem exhaust back, you wont get any more HP with an aftermarket exhaust that you could not get with a boost controler.

Cheers guys, I was hoping to get a T28 at some point just wasn't expecting it to be so soon.

I will run it a little while and see what happens.

Sounds stupid I know, but what will a catch tank do?

nope, catch tank wont do a thing to help that, its just the lack of back pressure showing weakened turbo oils seals. if its on the overrun, im not sure a one way valve will help either.

it will catch the oil vapor that forms in the sump and in the head, and direct them to a tank.

When the car comes out of the factory, these vapors are recirculated through the intake. It clogs turbos, intercoolers, pipes and lowers octane. Which is why it is better to direct them in a can, where they can go back to their liquid form

You need to empty it on a regular basis, because most of the time it will catch water vapor, condensing there after a humid night or rain. I had to empty mine every week this winter, as the car was sleeping outside (had a supra in my garage). Nearly never a sign of oil though.

You *could* vent them directly to atmosphere, but i am quite sure it could catch fire (that and it will create pollution, recirculation is used to prevent pollution)
