    Alfa Scuderia "non originale"

    Hi folks.

Well I've pulled my finger out and got myself membership of SXOC so I won't be loading up ekjim's Anglia project with my posts.

An idea spawned a bit over a year ago to modify my classic 1967 Alfa GT stepnose into the car I alway have wanted it to be. Pretty classic lines but something interesting to make it go faster. There have been many transplant projects including twin sparks, V6 etc. To get any real power you have to spend big bucks and the gearbox is the weakest link. Anyhow I stumbled across a transplant that a Greek fellow living in Austrailia had done (SR20DET into a 1973 bertone). Everything looked so right under the bonnet and there was a tentative link between Nissan and Alfa (Alfa Arna was basically a joint Alfa / Nissan project) so that maintains the heritage link

Any how thats the background and my plan was to do the full conversion for under £2k. Well that went out of the window but more on that later. At last years Montee Historique in Laon France I was chatting to one of the guys from PPC mag and after a few beers made the ambitious claim that I would return in 2011 in my turbo Alfa. hmmm

    So onto the pics.

Already done quite a few modifications including uprated suspension, LSD rear axle and new wheels. Off to Peterborough to buy the donor a late S14 with a big battle scar from losing it in the snow. I had done a bit of research on SXOC and had my mechanic mate Tom with me and the car whilst cosmetically a bit sad ran well with no knocks or rattles.

Next Tom and I pull the engine out of each car.

    and out of the Alfa

Engines look very similar in dimensions

I was aware that the transmission tunnel would be way too narrow for the Alfa box and so I would need to have it remade.

    More to follow...

What you really want to do though is to swap in the V8 from an 8C - like my GT has in Forza 3

Absolute beauty, and I bet it will be a bit of a weapon when the conversion is finished.

What sort of power does the stock engine make?

Car looks stunning. I'm with Kieran on the blasphemy of pulling an Alpha heart out of it.

    Epic car. :

Ignore the haters. Can't decide between this and the Mad Minor for my "most favourite SXOC car ever" award.

    So, so sexy

Surely something like a tuned Fiat Twincam would be a little more fitting?

One of my key objectives was to be sympathetic with the conversion and not destroy the car. Whilst it may be modified there is no reason that some day in the future the owner (whether it is me or not) could put the car back to original if they wanted to.

Dropping the engine into the bay was the first time I knew for sure that it would fit without any major chopping.

Amazingly it landed straight onto the original mounts.

Good news!! Only the transmission tunnel to modify. 1mm cutting disks meant removal of the tunnel was very neat and all in one piece which will go up into the attic.

I was going to have a go at making the new tunnel myself but Ed (the son of a friend of a friend) was looking for some work and was really enthusiatic over the project. Ed set to work making hoops to provide the template for a nice round tunnel.

Ed took away the hoop template to get fabricating while I got on with other jobs.

    Fuel tank.......

I'm with you on this one. A classic alfa is a beautiful car. It will now sound horrible driving down the road. Should of fitted an alfa v6

I thought I might cause a bit of division.

V6 is a big heavy motor and involves lots of chopping and going more than 250hp gets expensive again. I agree an SR20 does not sound like a raspy Alfa Twink (I will miss that a bit).
