In spring/summer I leave my car at work and cycle in. I vary the route so that it takes a bit longer, but essentially I have the same 'commute' as you do .

I could get a job 5 mins drive away and save myself the hour plus commute each way, every day, but I'd not get more than 50% what I'm earning in the city

I could probably earn a lot more if I commuted a long way instead of 3 miles. But I enjoy the free time I get as a result of a 10 minute each way commute, and is worth the lower salary. And I don't particularly want to move from the great house I have in order to have to work for someone else for a bit more money that would only be spent on petrol or a different house.

Sure, it is a massive saving but I've bought this car now so will be running it for a while

150 miles a week. Half an hour there 15miles and then 30 mins on a Park and ride bus ( 2 miles!)

£18 in fuel go go gadget diesel
£12 a week for the park and ride
    £90 a year car tax
    £30 a month car ins

£157 a month taking that all into account £7 a day

    Or

£150.60 A month for the train, that takes a hour and a bit to go 15 miles ... 2 carriages which is just ****ing stupid. its rammed! i would stand all the way there and back.
I work odd hours and they go at really odd times.
Add in its a 15 min walk to the train and then 10 min the other side. I would have to leave the house at 7:00 to get in for 9:00

    ^^^^ **** the train.

i did similar sums a few monthsago... hence the change of car... the 07 plate Alfa costs me a similr amount per monthcompared to the Volvo!!!

The fuel & tax savings directly offset the cost of the car! im saving now over 150 per month changing from the 12 yearold car to the 3 year old nicer car!! plus the new car has warranty so fingers crossed, all those little bits that fall off and need to be fixed also dont have to be paid for...

as for public transport... a mate commutes to the smoke so has a ticket worth more than my house! problem is, when hes ill or on secondment for more than a day he needs to cancel and re-buy the thing as every day thats 60 quid down the pan!!!

Dave, you run a big heavy lovely 535!

Swap it for one of these and get into hypermiling

Dont forget to add in depreciation of the car too, what with it being a high miler by the time you come to part with it

Interesting to see it worked out though.. so I did mime too

So: 50 miles per day at about 37mpg (7 days per tank), tax, mot, insurance and parts comes to £10.95 per day (thats working days too not 365) Not too bad, though I'm crap at maths so it could still be way off

No depreciation added in as the car was bought for a whopping £200 a couple of years ago Its a 1.4 Astra estate now with 132k on the clock

cheap car under 1549cc (cheap tax, insurance fuel etc..)

    60 miles @ ~24p/mile (40+mpg using £1.33 SUL)=£7 per trip(£7 save per day)
    Insurance @ sub £200pa = 0.54p per day (£300 saving per year)
    Tax @ £125 pa = 34p per day (£120 saving per year)

small car rough estimate on yearly savings
£7 per day fuel saving average 240 days per year = £1680 saving on petrol
saving £420 on insurance and tax per year

    TOTAL saving - £2100
Am I the only one who would happily pay £2100 to make a sub 1549cc car as smooth, fast, pimp and generally lovely as a 535i?

    ~£17 a day ... OUCH

The worst bit is that even if I was driving a 40mpg diesel it would still cost me ~£12 a day.

This of course doesn't include the cost of tyres / servicing etc ...

    I love cars

    Dave
It aint cheap, this for a legacy, and Im typing as I add so I reckon its going to hurt. This year parts and costs so far:

    £700 insurance
    £220 tax
    £330 For exhaust sorted
    £180 for Front tyres
    Petrol costs (280 miles a week) - 52 x £70 = £3640 ouch mo***rf***er!

Thats more then the bloody car is worth

Only reason I aint sold it so far is Im getting my petrol covered at the minute.

Well I'm seriously considering fixing and selling the Beemer, I have to have a cheaper car to commute in

This is a really shitty decision to make as i love how smooth the car is but it's the right thing to do for my family. Bollocks.

Keep the Beemer, buy a cheapo car for commuting. I'm on my second K11 Micra now (yes, the first is still going, I just upgraded), and they're bloody brilliant, £400 a pop and they just keep going

There's no way I could justify £500 insurance and £245 tax for a car I wouldn't ever drive

This is a tempting compromise: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...s/30?logcode=p
