    Help! Ford Mondeo won't start

Collective wisdom of the SXOC massive I beseach thee, my '53 2.0 petrol Mondeo won't start. I'm pretty sure the battery is fine as the headlights don't really dim when I crank it. We've had a similar problem once before which mr RAC man diagnosed as the fuel pump playing up. I wasn't there but apparently several hard taps on the fuel tank sorted it.

I believe it may be the fuel pump, given not starting yet cranking easily and the previous RAC assistance. So, any ideas how I can check and if it is, replace it? Or, pointers to a workshop manual?

Firstly - WTF did you buy a 2.0 petrol Mondeo

Secondly - As you have had problems before that would be the first thing to check i will dig out a guide for you Rob Something else it could be is the CPS (crank sensor)

Looks like the tank has to come out

    • Raise and support the vehicle.
    • Detach the exhaust system from the exhaust hanger insulators.
    • Remove the exhaust system heat shield.
    • Disconnect the fuel tank to fuel filter fuel supply line and the fuel filter to fuel injection supply manifold fuel supply line from the fuel filter.
    • Remove the fuel filter
    • Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.
    • Disconnect the fuel tank vent pipe from the fuel tank.
    • Remove the headlamp leveling sensor (If Xenon lights fitted)
    • Detach the ARB bar connecting link from the ARB on both sides.
    • Remove the ARB bush retaining clamps from both sides and remove the ARB.
    • Using a suitable transmission jack, support the fuel tank.
    • Detach the fuel tank support straps.
      1. Remove the fuel tank support straps.
      2. Rotate the fuel tank support straps.
    • Disconnect the fuel return line.
    • Pull the fuel tank support straps down to remove.
    • Disconnect the evaporative emission canister purge valve hose from the fuel tank.
    • Partially lower the fuel tank
    • Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the fuel supply and fuel return lines from the fuel pump module.
    • Remove the fuel tank.
    • Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module locking ring.
    • Remove the fuel pump module.
      1. Rotate the module counterclockwise.
      2. Lift the module from the fuel tank.
    • Discard the O-ring seal

Thanks guys. Mark, once you've got kids you need a Mundano. The turbo'd MX5 provides the kicks these days

Thanks for the guide, it doesn't look like an easy job. I remember putting the Walbro in the 200 and that was a doddle compared to that list of jobs!

Moran, I'm now very sure that's what the RAC man did. No MIL light so unlikely to b that. I've tried tapping the bottom of the tank (big black plastic thing just in front of the OS rear wheel) but I'm not sure which part of it I should be tapping. Any tips?

Given its the family car that the wife drives I just need to get it started so that I can get it to the garage and they can fix it. I can't really expect the wife to carry a rubber mallet around and start smacking the fuel tank each time it plays up!

I did look a the derv instead but the TDCi was about £1500 more than the 2.0 when I bought it and we didn't have the cash at the time

Its still sat on the drive going no-where. I'll give it one more go tomorrow and then if no luck get it recovered to the local garage and the pump and filter replaced
