If te water is 100% fine it has to be something else. Did you have any box fish? Could the water of got hotter than normal, have you checked the heater (they can fail in the 'on' position).

No box fish The heater could be to blame I suppose, but when I got back the temperature was normal (~26 degrees celcius) but the heater was off (there's a little light to show it's status). How long it had been off I can't be sure, so like you say it may have over heated and the temperature had dropped back to normal over time. I'm going to take some water for further testing tomorrow just in case the salinity has dropped or something (my refractometer is being borrowed at the mo).

The females are brown and pretty boring looking (mine are anyway) though she did start off blue

The colour change to brown could be a maturity thing?

My ones are mouth brooders which is piss funny... You see the egg spots on the males? On thier anal fin. This is to make the females try to pick them up so matey can sperm in her mouth and fertalise her eggs which she is carying in there LOL

They tend to do little circles around eachother while doing this

I got hold of a min/max digital thermometer from where i used to work and that tells me the min and max that the temp went to before its reset. I check it once a week, and i was quite surprised by the temperature sweep. ( i used to be a calibration engineer for a pharma company, so am a bit of a temperature perv...)

I have just started fish keeping. Had the tank about 4 months now and got it looking nice and stocked with some nice tropical fish, then white spot and fin rot attacked and killed 5 fish in less than a week.
Think its all sorted now, but its hell of a way to learn.

Its all good fun and I can spend hours looking at them but when summat like that happens its horrible.

I've kept tropical fish on and off for about 7 years and never had fin rot. Is it something fish just develop or?

cucumber and lettuce leaves last less than a night...the bristle and the chains devour with speed!!!

Ok, i want another couple of fish. Bit more centre stage, really.
The bristlenose, otto, shrimp are all doing well, the coolies (2, no idea where the third went) and the "lets dig up all egons plants" chain loaches are all great, but want something that sits in the middle and shouts loooook at meeeeee!

    any ideas?

Thats a lovely looking tank mate. I was in my local fishy shop yesterday and they had 2 crayfish in a tank similar to that. Looked really nice.
I bought three gourami's. two seem to have paired up already! Just fed them and they looked at me like "whats that then????"

Thought i'd throw up an update....

Well, gotta say thanks to all the people on here who have helped and pointed me in the right direction with this fish malarkey...
    Jem, bahnstormer,marcos,mark etc,etc...

Ok, fish...Well, i now have a small shoal of tetra, 6 neon and 6 cardinal. Theyre cool...so cool that i now have 13 of them...i have no idea where the hell the little one came from!!

(focus is a bit out, sorry, clag on the glass made the canon freak out a bit.

I have solved the snail issue by getting some assassin snails only theyre as horny as hell and i have BUCKET loads of them now!!

Bahns filter is nestled in and running alongside the internal for a couple of weeks until i get some bacteria in it.

    Only just went in!

    The gourami are at home...

    So, all in, i have:

    3 Gourami,
    2 Kuhli loach,
    2 Chain loach,
    1 Bristlenose plec,
    1 Otto,
    6 Neon,
    7 cardinal,
    6 harlequin
    1 random shrimp..
    a truckload of assassin snail.

    Loving it...

out of interest,if a heater keeps warming,is it fecked? or is there a reset button or something, noticed the tank getting too warm,so i put it in a bucket set it to 22 degrees, and went back 10 mins later and it was 45 degrees!
    Knackared

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

And if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem!

My tank as it was with all the hard corals:

4 foot by 28" front to back by 26" deep. 4' x 2' x 2' sump tank and 750~ litres of salty goodness

I decided to sell of the corals as tank maintenance was like a full time job. I now keep a semi-fish only with live rock tank with a couple of "softie" corals in there
