*****s Project Thread (Nearly 15 years in the making and VERY pic heavy!!!)

    Hi folks,

    So here we are, another project thread Seeing as I've been meaning to do this for over a year now it's long over due! If you get bored and give up I can't say I blame you

    I've used a few paragraphs from a blog I put together on the SXOC for reference of the history of the car as I just can't remember it all! So here you go, the making of my 1999 S14a 200SX (so far )

    I bought the 200 back in 2001 for the princely sum of £13,124 from a Nissan maindealer near Bournemouth. Can't imagine them going for that much these days but that was the going rate back then (at a main dealer anyway!)

    I'd had a couple of RWD cars prior to buying the 200 but never a Jap car and no turbochargers either so it was a whole new ball game for me.

    Here's what the car looked like back then;

    Completely standard with what I thought back then was a lovely cream leather interior. The car had done just over 10k miles back then so was only just worn in really.

    The only very slight fly in the ointment was that I had asked if the car had been in a crash to which the dealer told me a definite "NO!" but years later I found a tiny amount of overspray so I could probably have got her a little cheaper! Looks like it was only very superficial thank god.

    I'd had the car for about 6 months when I found the SXOC site, I was looking for cheaper car insurance (no meerkats back in those days ) and stumbled onto the site. I joined in April 2002 and that was the start of the slippery slope

    Didn't think much of it until I'd been to my first meet. NinjaSX took me out in his S14 (which was about 400bhp at the time) and it blew my socks off.

    After that it was modding all the way. I'd never taken a spanner to a car in any way shape or form before so it was going to be an expensive decision.

    I started off getting my work done at Abbey Motorsport in Oxsted. they were a bit pricey but the work was great (at first!). I started off with a pretty straight forward exhaust (HKS Hi Power) and air filer (Apexi). They persuaded me to go for an ECU and FMIC (which I bought myself). On their advice I got them to fit the FMIC and supply an HKS F-Con S, it was great and I was very happy with it but sadly I was tied to Abbey as only HKS power dealers have the mapping software and they just became too expensive for me.

    After all that she was running 264bhp at the fly, I was pretty happy with that. I'd fitted a few other bits and bobs like clear indicators, the Whitleine ARBs and Cusco strut braces front and rear and was really happy with how the car was handling and performing.

    here's what she looked like then;

    Sadly I've lost all my digital pics from back then as my PC packed up so if any of you have any old pics of the car from 2002 - 2004 please give me a shout

    :edit: well, that's been a result. JC has just sent me some pics from back in 2003 and 2004! I must have fitted the GTR allots sometime in 2003! (need to check my receipts to be sure)

    Here's the car at this rolling road day back in November 2003;

    By the middle of May 2004 I'd fitted new front brakes in the form of R34 GTR six spokes and the matching R34 GTR gold Brembo 4 pots. You can see the intercooler in the pics below

    Now, as you can see from the pics the car was in desperate need of lowering and some decent suspension fitted so I decided to go for some Tein Flex coilovers complte with EDFC (damping controller).

    Here's another one from July 2004;

    We did a trackday (if you can call it that!) at the Haynes Museum, Sparkford that year. Sadly i was running low on fuel halfway through the morning so shot off to a nearby Shell and in my hurry to get back forgot something rather important!;

    Thanks for the pic Nicely

    At Abbeys advice I went with some slightly softer springs (5kg/mm front and 4kg/mm rear instead of the standard 6kg/mm front and 5kg/mm rear) The car handled really well but I realised I should have stuck to the stiffer springs.

    Here's some pics from japfest 2004;

    It had come to a point where I have to decide what to do with her. Either I sorted out the now completely obselete ICE and get some decent equipment in or I go all the way and rip out the interior, put in some buckets and a roll cage and turn her into a proper track car.....

    After a minor disagreement with Abbey I saw a very impressive RB25 twin turbo set up in a red S13 at a Boxhill meet done by a bloke called Chris at PTS. After hearing lots of good feedback from the likes of Parker I started using them myself and haven't been anywhere else since

    Towards the end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005 I was busy buying up parts (some of which I STILL haven't fitted ). The only substantial changes I made were to fit a Mocal 24 row oil cooler and a couple of additional cooling vents in the front bumper to get some more cold air to the FMIC.

    Between march and April 2005 I fitted the stiffer springs which made a much needed improvement to the handling of the car and fitted a Defi VSD Concept HUD to the car, I cannot recommend them enough, it's without a doubt one of the best mods I've fitted to the car as it's something I can appreciate everytime I drive her and gives me loads of rassurance when doing trackdays and the like;

    So then, just as it was all coming together and I was ready for the Summer season disaster! In early July 2005 a local chav decided it would be fun to scratch her name into my bonnet

    I had to waste a substantial amount of cash on a replacement - the GP Sports CF unvented bonnet. I was really pleased with it. As a finishing touch I added some Top Secret black anodised bonnet pins to prevent any high speed disasters.

    Trouble was that it set back my engine rebuild fund by a fair amount. So I had to review my plans a little. In the end I decided to go for a good mid-range turbo that I could use with a standard SR20 along with a nice shiny 3" decat and down pipe. I was hoping to see some substantial gains.

    I threw caution to the wind and invested in a whole load of parts, a cracking deal from Apex bagged me a lovely brand new GT3071r Garret turbo, a nice new Greddy E-manage ultimate and a host of other bits including a lovely set of seats and harnesses (which by this point in time were about 4th hand!) from Stidi.

    The seats were previously Richie's, he sold them to Stidi when he broke his awesome white Norris Design S13 and then Stidi needed some cash so he sold them to me

    I still have the harnesses but the seats went back to Stidi a couple of years later

    It took until nearly Christmas 2005 to get them all on/in the car but there was a big problem with the turbo, we couldn't control the boost. It would seem that it's not uncommon with the 3071r (0.64a/r) speaking to a few others who had fitted the same. We took it off the car several times and the internal wastegate was working perfectly but on the car, even with the wastegate tied open and no actuator, it would make boost. It hit nearly 2bar on a couple of occasions although it was pretty lagggy

    The only thing we could put it down to in the end was a small divider in the trust turbo elbow. It wasn't obstructing the wastegate but there's a possibilty that it was building up a 'knot' of air in the elbow which allowed some boost to be put the the engine and once it started it wouldn't stop!

    In the end to solve the problem we decided on an external wastegate, I got a Greddy Type 'C' EWG 1.1bar spring. and Chris fabricated the pipework.

    He modified and strengthened the tubular manifold and fitted the EWG outlet but I gotta confess I pussied out, after two months of driving the car I was sick to death of the screamer pipe which made driving the car day to day almost unbearable (especially on motorways ) and would have been prohibitively loud for the trackdays I had planned. So I asked Chris to build me a feed to put it back into the exhasut and this was what he came up with

    The exhaust sounded basically the same s before the EWG although on boost when the gate was open it had a nice rasp to it. here's what it looked like on the car;

    Other new extras at this point were a Sard FPR, Walbo fuel pump to keep the Nismo 555s well fed as well as the breathing and exhaust work that had been done. Oddly the car was actually more economical to drive than before! There's a bigger A'pexi cone filter bolted to the Z32 AFM, and custom pipework (by PTS) feeding the Garrett GT3071r wg turbo, this was then cooled via the Hybrid intercooler and off into the plenum.

    On the exhaust side there was an Apex stainless steel tubular manifold fwith full PTS reinforcement from block to turbo and the beautiful Trust turbo elbow married to a Creasey 2 3/4" stainless down pipe and de-cat pipe. Finishing off with the HKS Hi-Power exhaust.

    The car felt so much more progressive at this point, and the spool up from the BB turbo wa incredibly linear, we put this down to using an external wastegate instead of the internal unit which we'd sealed off.

    In March 2006 I fitted a super sexy OS Giken twin plate clutch which Stidi sourced for me extremely cheaply in Japan I owed massive thanks to Juz and Parker for their patience helping me fit it (Cheers guys)

    I soucred a set of Z33 rear brakes which PTS also fitted for me along with a Z32 Master Cylinder which makes a huge difference to the stopping ability!

    So onto the summer of 2006 just before the car season starts up,. PTS had fitted some 740cc Nismo injectors and we'd set the boost up at 1.5bar. All ready for a summer of trackdays and shows, so you can guess what happened next... yep, you got it! Another disaster. This time I blew the piston ring lands on No.3 on a particulalry hot day. We took the head off at PTS, no obvious signs of det and the only damage we could see was some slight marbling on the liner;

    So off came the bottom end and here is what No.3 looked like ;

    Luckily MeLLoN Stu wrote of a lovelt marlin S14 he'd recently acquired from Wales. His misfortune was my silver lining as it gave me the chance to buy the SR20 and gearbox for a bargain price

    I owe John Beeeeennitt a HUGE debt of gratitude as if it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have got the bits. MeLLoN, God Bless him, wasn't the most reliable of folk and the day before I was due to drive to Newcastle he still hadn't taken it out of the donor!

    Here's what it looked like in the donor;

    John saved the day, took over an engine crane and took both the SR and the gearbox out for me

    After a total of 16hours of driving over 2 days (London to Poole, Poole to Newcastle, Newcastle to Bognor, Bognor to Poole and finally Poole to London!) the new engine was with the car at PTS.

    After a few days at PTS it looked much more at home under my bonnet

    I picked up a second hand Cusco rear roll cage from bren at Apex at that point too, and this seemed like an ideal time to fit it;

    Now I'll be the first to admit I just love my roll cage but I wanted to keep the rear inner 1/4 panels in as the car loked a little untidy. I thought it'd be a pretty easy job.... WRONG!

    It took me about two hours to fit the cage, then another 2 8 hour days to get these panels to fit like this. I had the cage in and out of the car about a dozen times trying to get it right, but I think it was worth it.

    Check out the fit ;

    So, getting up to date a bit now, I really wanted to sort out a decent aero package for the car but didn't want a BGW as I really like the smooth clean lines of the car as it was (de spoilered by now).

    I thought about doing some tuft testing on the car to establish where the clean and dirty airflow was so I could see if a few more sublte aero mods could make up the difference...

    The net result of all this was that I never got round to sorting the aero out!!! I'm after one of those re Aminya (sic?) style rear under aero diffusers and then I'm going to extend the undertray at the front and add a splitter but finding the rear diffuser at a reasonable price is proving difficult

    So the car was back on the road and running well, then the gearbox got a little noisey, turns out I was about to lose ever gear except reverse and 4th, but I only found that out when I was near Cambridge and had to make the 70 mile drive back to PTS around the M25 in rush hour traffic, with a twin plate clutch I can promise you it really wasn't much fun!

    Got the spare gearbox in and a few track days later the diff decided to get a bit noisy too. Chris at PTS persuaded me to fit a standard S13 VLSD which has a slightly shorter ratio (3.9:1 instead of the S14 standard 3.7:1)

    Which I was a little sceptical about, but the fact is it made a huge difference, it genuinely felt as if there was an extra 50bhp under the bonnet! (the numbers work at out nearer the equivelant of 21bhp in terms of the ratios)

    The car was running beautifully until the 9th of January 2008, when it finally happened. I was on the A34 heading towards the M3 when the back end stepped out, I wasn't worried, it had happened to me dozens and dozens of times before. Until I realised that I couldn't scrub the speed off fast enough and I was getting too close to the armco on a wet slippy road with nowhere to go .

    It ended up with a very bent 200 and the car needing some major repair work. My lovely GP Sports bonnet was ruined and the car looked like it was going to be a write off.

    Here was the immediate aftermath, I was completely gutted

    The exhaust had seen better days!

    Here's the armco

    I really didn't want the insurance company getting their hands on her so I thought I'd try and limp her 53 (yep, 53!) miles to PTS. The car ran fine and the exhaust was salvagable enough to get pointing in the right direction. All we needed to do was stop the wheel arch rubbing, Parker and I managed it with some brute force and ignorance!

    I won't go into the whole sorry story here but nearly seven months later she still wasn't back with me. I had no transport and no immediate prospects of a car!

    Thankfully G Master T saved my bacon . He lent me this beasty, i taxed her and used her for a couple of months to get me by

    In fairness the insurance company were simply excellent (big thanks to Adrian Flux and Equity Red Star, I cannot thank them for their help enough and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others )
    Here's what the 200 looked like while getting rebuilt;

    So finally in August 2008 I got the car back, the bodyshop were a complete nightmare (Fontwell Bodywork or something like that, safe to say - avoid!) The work was excellent but the time scales were frankly a joke!

    Once back at PTS Chris built a gorgeuos custom hot pipe for the new Greddy FMIC;

    And I got to fit a new GP Sports CF Bonnet (probably the last new one left in the UK if not the world!) courtesy of SRB Power with a set of aerocatch bonnet pins. i think they lok much smarter than the old Spraco type pins

    While all that was going on I got hold of a pair of stunning Chargespeed carbon fibre bucket seats which looked an absolute treat in the car.

    So that was that, after a bill in excess of £12,000 the car was all back in onepiece and as good as new , if not better!

    Juz and I decided to try and get a pic in this years calendar and thse were his efforts (you may notice a few more of his pics earlier in this thread - cheers Juz )

    I took a tube of autosol to the nice new exhaust to get it super shiny;

    And that was about that. After a cracking track day at Abingdon the car was running well and I really happy with her.

    i've done a few more cheeky mods lately, sorted the LED rear brake lights and a CF bootlid, I'm not 100% happy with the fit but I'll get it done fairly soon.

    Here's the bootlid;

    Finally some front end spring (winter ) cleaning. A Kouki grill, EPRacing CF coilpack cover, SRB CF Cooling panel and a Tomei stainless Oil cap I bought years ago and forgot about!

    And that's about it for now. I've got a Koyo rad and a Greddy baffled sump sat in the spare room waiting to go on and a Zenki rear bumper in the garage waiting for a respray.

    I'm hoping to get the underside of the car tidied up, brushed down and all the rust removed before a good waxoyling

    I'll get pics up when I get round to it

    Cheers guys,

    It felt strange documenting the whole history of the car like that, you forget just how much you've done with it!

    Thats one interesting build, just sat here and read it all whilst watching Hustle! Some serious damage done in your crash, but nice to see you saved it, and brought it back to life! Thats one tidy motor you have no *****! Nice to see it!

    Nice little write up there, I never realised you'd bashed her, dunno how I could have missed that unless you kept it quiet it but she's looking great again now.

    Found a mistake for you to correct though, you've said you swapped from an s14 4.1 diff to an s13 3.9. That would make your car slower to accelerate, s14 is a 3.7.
