my keyboard here has the @ symbol working on the number 2 key and the " symbol working where the @ symbol should be. is there any way of changing this to the correct position?

Sounds like your keyboard has been set to american. You should be able to change it to UK in control panel, something like "date, time, language, regional settings" on XP.
I think there is some quick change gadget you can enable, that may be how it got changed.
Yup you have the wrong regional settings..
In control panels, you can set everything to British ect..
^^^ as above. What version of Windows are you using (assuming it's Windows and not a Mac - because everybody knows that Macs are perfect )
For Vista or Windows 7, go to Control Panel and choose "Clock, Language and Region". From there make sure that on the Formats tab you have English (United Kingdom) and on the Location tab you have United Kingdom shown under Current location: and in Keyboards and Languages click Change keyboards... and make sure that English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom is selected as the default input language

hi guys, I have xp,
have checked the regional settings and they are english(uk)
is there anything else I can look at, the problem is driving me mad?

physically swap the keys?
Right click bar at bottom of screen, toolbars, language bar. then click the language bar icon (EN or two rectangles and a down arrow), select english keyboard. Ok everything.
