    Re-wiring five-wire airline headphones

    Managed to keep hold of a couple of pair of high quality airline headphones which I want to re-wire to use a 3.5" phono jack. Yes, I could use an adapter, but it's a bit cumbersome in the long term.

    I've stripped one back and found FIVE wires: red, blue, white and two black. So, which is which?

    Why 5 wires? I could understand four if they have one of those double connectors, but what's the last one?

    I'd only expect 4 as well.

    Normally 3 for a normal set of headphones isn't it? 2 insulated wires and an uninsulated ground?

    High quality airline headphones? What? Does such a thing exist?

    You know, you can get Sennheiser CX300 mk2 for <£20 now! Not worth getting the soldering iron out now is it?

    Yep, but those stupid aeroplane ones have 2 jacks on one plug so are likely to need 2 earths.

    EDIT: Hmm, thinking about it 4 wires makes more sense if they're dual mono plugs...

    Typically

    Red = right,
    White = Left
    braid/black = negative, if there's two, solder them together.

    Fook knows what the blue is for.

    Would expect the extra wire would be used as a extra ground to help stop interference?

    Depends whether you've ever tried a pair of Etihad Business/First Class headphones. They are about 1000% better than any other airline headphones I've used.

    I've had Sennheisers and was thoroughly unimpressed. Thanks for the wiring info though

    Speaking of Sennheisers as the quality budget brand, has anyone else tried Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220's?

    I have the VI version for my iPhone and rate them much better than my old Bose in ears, over half the price too...

    Guy at work has a set of UE SuperFi 5 and says the Metro's are not far off and could not then condone the £100 difference in price...
