Have you used Vinegar to strip the spring?

I'm currently stripping my engine down to clean and paint and I was just going to give the spring a light coat of paint but the polished spring looks great!

I'm using a solution of Deox-C mixed 15 to 1 strips them off lovely.

I was thinking about painting them but the movement would make the paint crack I think.

You mean chrome plated? Would cost too much for two small parts.

I'm curious, what were your compression test results?

Was that done hot or cold? Where were the losses - rings or valves?

Could only do it cold as the engine is on a stand.

    Leaks were mainly exhaust valves.

I'd be tempted to see what it's like when it's up and running and hot. Has it ever been hard to start?

That would be too much work to get it back in just to do it hot.

Right, been thinking about this and looking at different options and I've come to the conclusion that the heart of the car needs to be a little bit more special so going to look at rebuilding the engine completely.

The engine rebuild will happen once the engine bay has been spruced up as I need to save up more cash to pay for the engine.

forged rods and pistons and some poncams, then upgrade anything else to go with those.

I know you all like updates so here's a small one.

Radiator support brackets came off and looked a tad bit rusty.

The part was given a quick going over with a wire brush by hand.

    Nice lol

And that's how much rust came off both brackets.

Into the Deox tank it goes.

    24 hours later

This was the worst one of the two, straight from the tank.

After a rinse in soapy water and a quick wire brush.

    I'm impressed

They are now back in the tank for another soak.

Next time I'll sand blast the parts first to remove all of the paint.

Hi mate. I trust all is well :-)

I found brushing them half way through works well to work stuff loose. Thing is though I was disappointed in some way. It removed the rust but the metal was so pitted it still looked crap. Depends how rusty stuff is.

Oh also watch how quick things rust afterwards. Can be literally minutes after rinsing.

    Yeah doing good buddy. You?

Yeah, those parts are back in for their second session. It's mixed at 15 parts water to 1 part deox so it's a fairly weak solution.

Parts like this, I don't care if they looked pitted or not as you will never see them. It's mainly just to get rid of the rust. I've got Bilt Hamber Etch primer that will go on these pretty much straight after they next come out and get dried off. .

This weekend was a busy one and involved firstly removing Marks Gearbox from his Discovery. What a pain that was.

Then today it was time to clear the garage out to get the car inside so I can really get into the engine bay and clean it up.

Really can't wait to get this bay in fresh paint. I still can't decide on a colour though. Idea's anyone?
