    Phoning HM Revenue & Customs

Do they just put contact numbers on their letters for a laugh? Was trying all morning to get through to my office and the line was busy every time. I eventually check the number and discover that the Dorset & South Wilts office is actually in Derby and not Dorchester as the letter I have states... So, spend the afternoon trying to get though to the different number. Constantly busy.

Are they some mythical government department? If so, where the fcuk does all my money go?!

I'm guessing you owe then monies then Christian - they like to make it extra hard to contact them so you can be charged for being 'late'

More useless than the DVLA most of the time I'm afraid

No. They actually sent me a refund I wanted to speak to them to tell them they do a great job and I feel I'm not paying enough.

Finally got through...after redialling continually for twenty minutes.

Took my boss over 6 months to get a refund out of them when they buggered his tax up a few years back....

Makes me glad I don't earn enough to have to talk to them

Hey, I'm about to move to Finland, so any tax I've paid in the past is about to look like pocket money...

    1-2%

Then there's municipal tax (like council tax, I suppose) which is 15-20%, THEN there's income tax at 8.5-31.5%, THEN the health insurance contribution. And VAT is 22%.

That's if you're actually registered to live there. If you're not, they'll fleece you 35% straight PLUS €17 PER DAY before that's deducted. And health insurance if relevant.

    Investment income is 28%.

Because, despite all that, it's a fantastic country. It has the sixth most competitive global economy (it'd be higher if it wasn't for the tax) and Helsinki is ranked sixth globally in cities people are most happiest to live (no UK city was anywhere near the top of the list). Public transport is great, health is great, education is great and they speak better English than most of our school leavers. Basically the taxes are high, but they're spent on the right things, not paying off national debt... The Finns are straight-talking, no-nonsense and very sincere. If they promise something, they do it and expect the same of you. After 27 years in the UK, I find those VERY rare traits. Then there's the climate. Cold in the winter. Proper cold. Dry not wet. People are still able to drive, even after and inch of snow!! Summer this year has been warmer and more consistent than the UK.

    Oh, and there's a woman...

we had 30 minutes of calling a constantly engaged line at the redundancy agency. eventually got to the automatic system, which after half a dozen questions with a press 1 press 2 option told us all lines were busy, and asked us to call back.

    ferkin useless

Finland's an awesome place The people have some of the oddest ways, but they are all very friendly, and despite the price of alcohol, they all drink like fish...

Are you moving to Helsinki, or somewhere out in the sticks?

Have you been to an ice hockey match over there yet? Seriously good fun... subdued during the game, manic drinking for the 15 minute break, then back to the game... repeat several times...
