wow! its good to see some people still do things properly and not by halves!
are you part of pumapeople.com or projectpuma.com?
these are great little cars.the damage on the bore of that one looks like classic nikasil erosion.these engines had nikasil lined bores to strengthen them as they were origionally machined as 1.4 so when they bored them out,it weakened the block...so they put a nikasil liner in to strenghen it...only problem being, high octane fuel breaks down nikasil.so best to use low grade fuel when your finished.i had one of those engines in my fiesta.good fun!!!
Bit of an update......
Been busy fighting the rust. It has been pretty much just surface rust so just a case of wire brush on a drill and then getting busy with the Hammerite
The rad support was quite rusty so I was going to clean it up and paint it but saw a new one was only £7 from Ford (thanks to my discount (but only £11 retail) so it was a no brainer
Also got new wishbones, droplinks and trackrod ends to go on
Just got to finish painting the subframe (bloody weather) and it can start to go together
Looks like you've done a nice job there mate - Hammerite from a rattle can I presume?
Cool - thought the finish looked too good to be brushed on.
Certainly looks a lot better anyway
Yay some progress
Right this week got a few bits back in, fitted the new rad support bar, wiper motor, pollen filter housing, ran the loom back round etc.
Then Saturday I built the subframe back up with new drop links and track rod ends.
I have more pics on my camera which i will post up tonight but basically on Sunday I :
Checked tappet clearances and adjusted
Fitted new timing belt and tensioner
Fitted cam cover and belt cover
Fitted exhaust manifold
I also fitted the new clutch which is a bit of an experiment as I dont think anyone has done it before. I have gone for a Fiesta ST one as not only is it bigger in size slightly but also has stronger fingers hence more clamping force. Having looked at it in depth at work with some colleages we cant see any reason for it not working
The box went on ok but whilst doing so (i hade the engine tipped on its nose to make it easier) I noticed a leak from the cup plug on the water pump
Took the pump off the old engine and it looked like new so swapped them over
Fitted the cat and then slide the whole lot under the car ready for fitting this weekend.
Its looking very good
I keep meaning to tackle tin worm issues on our puma, but kind of affraid it'll be a can of worms job. I'll just do this bit, oh but this bit needs doing, and that... Its got a LOT more issues than yours has before you started!
I think that's why every evening I came home there was more off the car than actually attached to it
Just been out to buy some more goodies for it
Brings the total list of new bits to
Timing belt kit
Clutch
Release bearing/slave unit
Wishbones
Front droplinks
Track rod ends
Rad support bar
Driveshaft seals
Heater control valve
Sparkplugs
Rocker cover gasket
Plug leads
Pollen filter
Air filter
Oil filter
Aux Belt
PAS fluid
Brake fluid
Engine oil
Gearbox oil
Coolant
If it fails the MOT I will be most upset
New wishbones too ay, are they a pain to re-bush?
Should have fitted a new stat while it was out just in case, they look a right fucker to get to on these
(GF's brother has one he bought with front end damage he is repearing for himself)

Ford parts with employee discount... not sure I could be bothered to do bushes in lower arms
Can I send my car to you as your next project Mark? Looking really good!
They are actually pattern ones but good ones, not cheap chinese shit from ebay (seen some on there for £9 each )
Rebushing costs £25 a side plus the hassle, these were £35 each so a no brainer IMO
Tyres are newish as are the brakes. Took the stat out and checked it, it looked new
