    Ford Puma Project

    Something a bit different

We picked up a Y reg Puma 1.7 last weekend with a blown head gasket and possible further damage. It had been compression checked at a Ford dealers and the findings were

    Cyl 1 = 40psi
    Cyl 2 = 20psi
    Cyl 3 = 10psi
    Cyl 4 = 20psi

Now the car is a one owner jobby with 72k on the clock and Full Ford History so even with the engine issue it seemed woth getting

Got it back from Leicester thanks to Dan@DB Power and set to work stripping off the head on Monday eve to see how bad the damage was.

    Head ready to come off

However on removing the head I was greated by this

So thats that fooked On initial inspection though the head look ok so should get a few quid back on that

Luckily we have a spare lump ready to go in, it just needs a few bits swapped over like the flywheel and manifolds plus fit a new clutch to it.

    More updates to follow

    Nope same engine

And on the topic of the engine, how is it possible for Yamaha to design a VVT sprocket that doesnt rattle its tits off

This is going to be Dani's new drive as her Puma is getting a bit tired (142k now) so will be for sale soon.

    It got a bit warm

Heater valve spigot sheered off and dumped the coolant, not sure how long the previous owner drove like it, quite a while I reckon

I've spotted the problem, its a Ford engine with 4 pistons in.

Apparently Focus engines sometimes only come with 3 pistons

Mark, I was hoping you were going to be putting in a 2.0 TDCi Duratec engine or something and tuning the nuts off it

Probably because it's belt driven, GTS-T VVT's are quiet

Anyhow engine's fooked isn't it not seized though

    It now looks like this

    Basically removed

    The battery and battery box
    The fan
    Plenum
AC compressor and PAS pump and tied up out the way
    Rear Box mount
    Gear linkage
    Alternator and starter

Also removed both lower wishbones as they look like they have been in a salt bath

these will be cleaned and painted with some hammerite

So all thats left is to pop the driveshafts out, split the exhaust after the cat and then lower it down

    Well its out

Passenger side driveshaft wouldnt budge out the box so i ended up taking it out the hub end and dropping the whole lot with it still in the box. It came out afterwards though

Taken the box off the engine and removed the clutch and flywheel (clutch only had a few months left in it anyway) Funny thing was when i drained the engine oil, about 2 litres of water came out first

Time to start cleaning things up and collecting all the required gaskets etc

    Well a bit more progress

I am waiting on a few engine bits like a belt tensioner and a couple of gaskets so went on the cleaning offensive

A few areas that need attention

And I need a new starter cable

And today I got carried away

Going to try and give the whole bay a going over with some silver hammerite

Going to try and get the subframe off and drop the rack down

Well if i got carried away yesterday, then today I completely lost it

    Removed:

    Subframe
    Steering Rack
    Front Wings
    Scuttle Panel
    Wiper Motor
    Rad Support
    ARB
    Brake Servo & Cylinder
    ABS Module

and know it looks like this

Wanted to rip the AC out but cant be bothered getting it recharged

Loads of dead leaves and dirt under the scuttle panel and ontop of the firewall under the scuttle.

Now needs another good clean and then some prep ready for some paint Can start cleaning the subframe etc and paint them as well

And you question my reasoning of having three cars
