brand new pistons come with rings and gudgeon pins etc..

brand new 'front covers' come with an oil pump already fitted. the P2M one is a good pump, make sure you buy a DET pump as some places try to sell DE pumps instead. some people fit the pulsar pump as it has a higher capacity/pressure. loctite your bolts back in if you strip it to get it machined/ I like to swap the horrid screws out.

get a s14A/s15 timing chain kit as the guides have the metal backing and the chain tensioner is better. if it comes with new cam sprockets it the wrong kit.

    don't forget thrust bearings!!..

a new spigot bearing for the back of your crank isn't a bad shout whilst its all in bits.

Water pump was done recently too. Also only done roughly 6-7k miles.

What's the advantage of the arp main studs. How much extra work was the machining to fit these?

I just fitted them for peace of mind. I eventually plan on running over 500 bhp, so wanted extra security. I think the align bore cost me £150, so not that costly.
I found out mine needed doing after building the bottom end up, so had to strip it back to send off for machining again.

some people say they experience 'fretting' which is where the main cap walks around on the block wearing away the surfaces.

because the studs are tightened to a higher torque setting it squashes the main caps out of shape. so you have to fit it all up then line bore the holes so they are round again and all line up together.

its a good bit of messing around as you have to cut 2 rear studs down in length and pocket the sump etc.. I instantly regretted fitting mine TBH. mine actually came with the wrong instructions inside and gave me a massive torque setting. I think some people bodge it by not tightening them to the ARP spec, but then you run the risk of them working loose.

For me the only benefit of studs is that if you are having the engine apart a lot you don't to replace the fasteners that often and don't damage the block by threading bolts in and out of the block constantly.

    Same goes for head studs.

In terms of clamping load there is no real benefit when everything is squared and flat in the first place.

SRs already have a girdle which is there is help locate all 5 mains under high loads.

Hadn't remembered the thrust bearings/washers. Do these differ in size of can I just order new Nissan items?

The build will take a while yet as I'm saving for parts as I go but the engine is about ready to come out. I still need to disconnect a few bits but shouldn't be too bad.

Nice work Chris. You going to paint the block and engine bay too? it's a slippery slope lol.

Looking good chris, i just fitted the arp studs, as i see you talking about in an earlier post. The kits now come with 3 shorter studs so no more machining upper sump pans or cutting bolts.

They also weren't far off standard torque settings at 80ftlb if i remember right? Still unsure whether its worth the extra £100 but then again do we really need all the other stuff lol

Which arp studs are we talking about here mate? I've only ever used the head studs and nothing needed modifying
