Mot today and some investigation in to the knocking noise. Had some good news, some not so good.

The car passed with its standard advisories but when we had it on the ramp and held the car between 3-4K revs you could really tell where the noise was coming from.

This means the car is now off the road for the fordeable future

That's not good. Not sure if it's a positive point but gives you an excuse to rebuild stronger now.

Congratulations on passing your MOT! Shame about the knocking, but at least you know where you stand now. Will you be doing the rebuild yourself?

It's a good excuse and I like the idea but it's a lot of cash. I won't be building it myself as don't have the skill set.

Forging an engine certainly isnt cheap, but while its apart you might as well IMO. You'll no longer be running the engine at its' safe limit, and will have headroom for much more power.
Building the block back up is really easy just make sure you follow torquing sequences etc, and do it in a clean environment. Have a read into it if you have time It'll save you a fair chunk too.

Cheers Zeldoz, not too down about it tbh, already looking at future plans beyond this

I just jumped in at the deep end with mine as I did a little bit on engine building when I was at Uni. I got all the torque sequences from the manual you can download off here. It's at home on my laptop if you want me to email it over?

Disassembly and rebuild should be doable for you mate. Only thing I'd leave is all machine work. And make sure you get a decent place to do that too.

Any decision on over bore or decking? Ported head while it's off?

While it does get things done you need to decide how far to go as this even though expensive will be cheaper than opening it up again. Unless obviously you get confidence and are happy to do it again in future.

    Looking forward to the plans.

the workshop manual talks you through how to strip and rebuild the SR20.

I think there are also videos on youtube.

if your confident enough to fit the cylinder head and timing chain etc.. but not confident enough to mess around with the bottom end then you could just send the bottom end away to be rebuilt. if your 'engine guy' is ok with that of course. I think that dave yandel *SP is down south somewhere.

you cant decide on any bits till you have it stripped and inspected as the bores could be oval/ crank scored.

I've got a mate who will strip and rebuild it in between other jobs at his work. I may help where I can though. Not going to do much to the head bar possibly swap the bc springs out.

Got a place who will do the machine work so will see what they say regarding bore size etc.

Yeah they aren't best suited to vvt aplications. will go slightly softer so I don't kill the replacement sprocket

Early potential spec list. Any opinions or guidence welcomed

    Engine build

Head - as is. Valves and guides done 6k miles ago, 260 procams, bc springs. Tomei ras kit.

    Replace vvt sprocket.

Check face and possible skim. (Done 2012 -10thou)
    Valve stem oil seal replacements
Check arp headstuds and reuse if possible
Cosworth mhg 1.2-1.5 mm depending on machine work.

    Bottom end

    Clean
Deck block and oil pump housing
    Check/hone the bores
Check crank - any work needed
Refresh oil pump with new rotors
    New Oem timing chain kit
    Full Nissan gasket set
    K1 conrods
Wiseco pistons 9:0:1 comp standard size (dependant on block prognosis)
    "King" con and main bearings??

Anything else? Not sure of piston rings (will wiseco pistons come with some, if not Oem the best?) or if I need arp bolts throughout.

    Never heard of king bearings.

THat looks like a pretty decent list. The pistons will come with rings I went for ARP main studs as well as head studs. If you do go for these, you'll have to have the main caps line-bored, as the ARP's pull them out of shape.
Might as well stick a new water pump on there too.
