Bit more work on the car today all though progress was slow. I decided to fit an apex type 1 Fmic to replace my old type 2. Not sure if it'll make much difference but time will tell

Turned the car around to work on the front

    Stripped down

Part way through, intercooler attached at the top and hot side connected.

Hole in the battery tray cut using the measurements on the apex website, went slightly oversized to avoid contact

Borrowed a small battery to test fit, not sure it's up to the job though ??

Stripped it all back off to paint the chassis rails which needed to be cut a little, the battery tray and touch up the support bar etc.

This is all I managed today but at least it's mostly there

My cars peak boost went from 0.9 to 1.1Bar when I switched from type2 to type1 so just keep an eye on it

How was it? Guessing you've moved on to a battery in the boot?

Mine's an 054 and is still in the engine bay. They do the job, but only seem to last a couple of years even on a trickle charger.

Any chance you could measure it next time you're near the car, want the biggest battery I can fit in there really

There's not much else that will fit, pretty much the best you can hope for is 40Ah 330A

If you can get hold of some universal rubber trim, it would be worth lining the hole to avoid rubbing when driving. Vibrations and engine movement will probably see it rubbing even with a larger hole.

After fitting the new fmic the car wasn't running right with a misfire on WOT, made sense this would be a boost leak so pressure tested the system, this seemed fine so bolted it all back together with no improvement I chased this running issue for a few days and finally ended up refitting the old fmic with no change

So took it to a mates garage for some advice

Checked the plugs which looked fine in colour to me

On closer inspection they didn't look too good though

Swapped them out for some grade 8 coppers I had in stock which cured the issue just in time for the drag racing

Drag racing was dry for a change so I was hoping to get a new pb with the new diff etc.

My old pb was a 13.2 on a cold day with no launch control so I expected to easily beat this time. I managed 15 runs all of which were within a fraction of a second and mostly slower than before

I did finally scrape a new pb on the last run though and the new diff meant I was crossing the line up to 5mph quicker than before

To be fair the car was only boosting to 19psi rather than the 24psi it's mapped for so seems I did have a leak with the original fmic I refitted

To make things worse after what turned out to be my final run an "engine builder" from the crowd came up to me telling me he could hear some bottom end knock as the revs raised to launch the car. Obviously not wanting to damage it anymore I cut the day short so didn't have a chance to further improve on my time.

After some investigation I'm not 100% sure the knock is bottom end as it sounds like it could be a sticky lifter to me. We are thinking about bleeding the lifters and swapping out the vvt sprocket just on the ofchance but it's now looking like it might need a rebuild.

I removed the rocker cover to check for obvious signs of damage. One of the lobes had slight wear but believe that's from before when a lifter wasn't bled properly. The head does seem to be getting plenty of oil though.

If it needs a rebuild the car will be off the road for a while until the funds are available to do it properly.
