    S14 Differental

    Hey guys,

I have done a search and found a few good topics but nothing that really answers my question.

I have a S14 with about 150'000 miles on it, engine is still very strong and it drives really well, BUT coming from a MX5 with a great LSD which locked quite easily to a high miler with what i guess is a worn out LSD is no fun.

With the MX5 i could keep a nice drift round a roundabout all day long, but with the S14 its a battle, one wheel will always start to spin up and thats the end of that.

What should i do? I don't know how well a Non Worn S14 diff is like, should i get a second hand one, or a uprated one? I am not a hardcore drifter but like hanging the tail out from time to time and finding the odd abandoned roundabout and car park to play in.

    Thanks guy!

They seem quite £££ and hard to get hold of?

Is this the perfect solution or can i go for a different type, i want it easy to install too if that's a option!? lol

S15 helical is a bit bobbins for drift by all accounts.

The mx5 diff's seem pretty good tbh - lock up quite easily, Neither of my 14's have been that sharp.

TBH your best bet is probably to go with an aftermarket one if you're serious about pushing the car -circa £500 or so for a Kaaz, cusco, etc.
Alternatively, as above, weld up the viscous, or stick a welded S13 diff in there

There's something to do with casings, and shafts that supercedes my already pretty low knowledge...

Si, i really liked the MX5 Diff, really suited. I defo don't want a Welded one as i normally just drive along, but when i want to make shapes in a car park i want both wheels locked when one comes unstuck. Do i really have to spend £500?!

Will a lower Mileage Diff from a S14a not do the trick?

VLSDs are generally pretty shite. Had one in my R34 and 14 both low mileage and they wont lock both wheels for long. I'm planning on getting a proper kaaz 1.5 way jobby at some point.

might as well do it properly.

if you want to do it properly then you need a 1.5 way...

if you want to do it on the cheap then just weld your viscous unit... its much easyer than trying to source an s13 diff to wweld which you dont need to do...

both of the above compromise the comfort of your car so be warned...

if you want to find a hedge while messing install an s15 unit...

i was using an s15 unit up untill about 2 weeks ago... i have a welded s14 vlsd in there now...

What diff do MX5s have that let them lock nicely when wanted without making them uncomfortable to drrive normally?

Yer, the MX5 Diff was very good.

Is there no other way to get a better diff then to:

    A) Buy a Kazz 1.5 for £500 ish
    B) Weld my diff

    ???

You can shim the stock 14 diff to make it lock I believe. Do a search it's been covered before.

    Hi Chris,
if you really into drifting, than get a 2way, personal i dont want a 1.5 because same price. and more control-able on a 2way.

option B is good when you in a really tight budget.

there have option C, which is try find a silvia s14 standard diff. they are more tail happy than a UK spec diff.

    hope this help.

do a search mate you will find the thread, you do it yourself. shims from nissan are about £10 and you only really need one. takes 1-1.5 hours to take the diff off strip it down fit the shim and put it all back to gether again. its not a hard job at all
