    Advice on building a website?

Right, my mum has asked me if I can set a website up for her (starting her own business).

I've done a little HTML before, and have had a play with software like Dreamweaver so will use that.

Does anyone have any advice on who is good to buy the webspace from and where to buy a suitable url?

Also, as far as payment is concerned we'll probably use Paypal, but are there any 'plug-ins' that you can buy to add to a site that would deal with credit card payment, etc securely?

I have a few sites hosted with www.one.com they seem to be pretty good and quite cheap.

WORST HOST EVER, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

They over unlimited this and unlimited that, soon as you start to get reasonable traffic you suddenly hit a max connection limit and other sly limits that are designed to cripple sites and stop you using an "excessive" amount of bandwidth or server usage. By excessive they mean an unmodded phpBB3 forum with more than 10 people on line at any one time would cause the site to fall over

Customer service is AWFUL, i wanted to cancel. They didnt confirm it and then tried to say you didn't give us 2 months notice (totally unreasonable notice period purely to catch people out that want to cancel any decent web host will let you cancel whenever)

Then attempted to hold my domain to ransom and wouldn't release it to me until I paid. I ended up going over their head to reclaim ownership of my domain with joker and having to change all the passwords etc.

I ended up setting up my own vps server down to them as i was stick of the service you get with shared web hosting.

There are plenty of good ones out there though. try Webhostingtalk for a good discussion forum and you can pickup some great deals there.

dont use dream weaver it sucks i work for www.jumpaheadmedia.com
if she wants a decent site use us. were experts in seo (search engine optimisation)
basically were really good at getting you onto the front page of google fast, all our sites are coded to industry standard too.
anybody can build a site but when it comes to making it work not just look good you need to get it right.
a site can look the part but if its coding is poor ect ect its a pointless waste of time , remeber your site represents your business to more people than would see it on the high street.

    pm me for details.

Yup, SEO is an important part of building a sucessful online business.

Its also really odd, by the way. Firstly your forum name is "cooperjohn" which is actually my Dad's name. And secondly you have a Mini as your avatar which is, pretty much, my favorite ever car & I've built a race one and thirdly, we do a very similar job!!

Don't officially "race" my mini, only a mock-up car. But its all there, 98% there to road-legal Mini Miglia spec

Na, never used magento. Quite handy with osCommerce though. But personally I usually build from scratch. TextMate only
