Not my thing really as I prefer the understated look but how about a vinyl of an image of your engine bay? Would be a bit different
One I think may have been done but not as a full bonnet could be claws ripping through the metal.

Tricky one. Just doing the bonnet without covering any more of the car will make it look very 'heavy' at the front. You might want to go with something with more subtle colours so you can still have a full design but it doesn't then necessarily overpower the car.
I'm just about finished with the design on my own car, hope to get it finished off today as it goes. Will post up pics later if all goes to plan
One other thing, does he just to cut vinyl or has he a screen printer he can use, makes a difference on what sort of thing you can go for.

If he does screen printing I'd go with something like this. It will initially look like a carbon bonnet until you give it a second glance
What sort of shizzle are you after? Are you looking for cutesy-pie fluffy bunnies and hearts? Or grungy death-splitting skulls?
Is the car really shiney and mint? Or a bit of a drift shitter covered in scars and cable ties?

I used this Homer pic in a photoshop I did a couple of years ago and I always thought it would look cool as bonnet graphic.
I was struggling to find a big enough picture of a red PS13 to chop so I used this.

You know those pavement art things where they look like a big hole? Well I think you should have that sort of thing so it looks like an empty engine bay
