Jacked the car up on the weekend...

    and... this happened:

    Moral of the story:

Do *not* jack up where Mr Datsun tells you to, the thing had just rusted and my car has only done 79k!

Jack up somewhere else such as the diff and don't forget to use axle stands!

Namelezz on here was kind enough to pop over on the weekend and help me replace my left rear break pads, he had a look and said its definitely an mot failure (any sort of hole like that within 30cm of suspension components is apparently). His mate reckons its weldable so will have to go and make a trip next weekend and let him have a proper look.

Doesn't surprise me unfortunately - I've looked at some late 14a's of late witha friend and a lot of them look like similar could have happened

I think the moral of the story is more: Keep an eye under the sideskirts

Ditto from the early S14 owners who have for years been welding our cars up at MOT time

Jacked on the floor with a decent two tonne jack. Jacked where Nissan manual says its safe, aint doing that again.

That sh*t aint funny S13/S14 owners bit gutted really, pulling the jack out was a nightmare. Let this be a lesson to everyone.

I would NEVER jack on the floor I think you will find you are supposed to use the sills

I expect Nissan say sills, not floor..........

However, i'm still shocked at that pic my MOT man always comments on how solid mine is underneath as he goes round tapping away, so i'm remaining confident for the 14a's

Looking in the manual I think you may have mis-interpretted it

You jack off the diff or front X member and put axle stands on the sills

My s14a is about to go up on axel stands and the underneath stripped in Petrol style. I had a look over Christmas to make sure everything was ok but noticed there was some surface rust and some along the sills where stone etc had flicked up.

I suggest people look at Archenemys thread of a few years ago... actually I'll go find it and post it up.

    Found it...

Surely you can use the jack that comes with the car on the sills? I do just to get the car off the ground enough to slide a trolly jack under the cross member

Expensive lesson learned by the looks of that photo

oh well, on the bright side at least you found it!! I would rather find it & weld it solid than drive with swiss cheese style ventilation (nice in summer though)

Can't believe that this has happened to a 1999 car.... my 96 S14 has got some rust in between joins but not too much in terms of holed through steel*

Edit - Guess sea air hasn't done much to help things...

(*ahem... that I have found yet. u watch I'll bl**dy find some now)
