    E46 M3 or ????

    Hi guys

I'm thinking of selling my R32 GTR and Passat and buying a car that is a bit of an all rounder. Looking to spend up to 15k. What alternatives are there to the M3?

You can pick up a nice E39 M5 for well under 15k these days and i would have that all day long over an M3

Yep, any of those. If it were me I'd go for the E39 M5, but then, Phil's ACS E46 is damn ****ing tasty

Yes phils one is lovely. I want a bit of practicality to it. Its gotta be a compromise of the GTR and Passat. M5 is worth a look, bit more expensive to run than an M3?

Both M3 and M5 are expensive to run, so if your wanting cheepness then neither is a wise move.
The m5 is the only BMW i would consider, period.....

    You sure??

But yeah, I'd imagine the M5 would be mildly more to run than an M3, but not hugely, they'll both be big bucks

as many have said the e39 m5's have become affordable now and are awesome bits of kit! i wouldnt go down the e46 M3 route as theyre just too many about i see loads everyday and i dont remember the last time i actually saw an m5 on the road.

another option is a lighlty modded audi S4, with a few bolt ons they can be tweeked to RS4 power and theyre 4wd too which is a bonus

i dont think an M3 will be more to run than an R32 and a Passat so i'm not too botherd about those costs. i will only be paying 1 insurance, 1 tax, 1 mot, 1 servicing, 1 set of tyres etc etc.

I had an E46 M3 - Convertible with SMG - always drove it in manual. It was a lovely car to have - lovely to drive, finish was amazing, quality of the interior mega - swapped it for the c5 and prefer that - If you are getting an M3, be prepared for some expensive servicing - i sold mine with the next service being the major one - spoke to the dealer when it was in for a service and basic price before the usual you need this and you need that was £900!.

I didnt use it as my daily driver as I didnt want to clock up too many miles on it. I agree with bonelorry - have a look at the S4 - the way prices are just now thats a lot of car for the money

m3 is THE best car in its field as an all rounder!!
there may be similar priced cars out there with similar specs but id say the m3 is the one to go for if you want the best of everything!!
but then im an m3 lover
