The cheapest mod is to just lighten the car, strip out everything you dont need even the sound deadening.
Then look at suspension and breaks (you will always be able to break faster than you can accelerate).
NOZ - then f**k your engine up

Just basically made up a cat replacement, did the free boost upgrade, completely stripped it out, got decent coilovers and put the stage one ecu i found in the glovebox in

If you just hava a low income, start saving up for stuff breaking and rebuilding stuff. Than spend the first money on tools and your workspace. Than save some more money and before you know it you are replacing a seal, a bearing, a water pump etc.
IF you are really on just a budget and don't care if the car lives long, than just strip it, up the boost, weld the diff and go out and play and if it breaks, be done with it.

The second part, defo agree with the first part
Done on the cheap usually ends up wrapped around a lamppost (Noz excluded of course)
Save up abit and do several things at once to keep a decent balance of acceleration, braking and handling.

255lph fuel pump (£40 ebay)
Stage 1 chip from Jez (£90)
Boost controller from ebay (£20)
i agree, do brakes etc first... allows to to drive faster without extra power, its much more rewarding than just winding the power up. Power is nothing without control
a set of secondhand Avons = £20
a pair of used brake pads = free at any track day
for a mere price, the car will feel like its doing 100mph round every bend ..... but in reality you are only doing 20 mph
I found even the prefacelift brakes fine at stage 1. They only fade if you are really going for it and doing hard high speed braking, but for the odd blat down a back road they are ok. Im only upgrading cos my current discs and pads are almost worn out.
I used to murder discs and pads at stage 1 with my auto car hence the reasoning behind it. Personally i wouldn't feel comfortable upping the power when running mere 257mm discs. Just my 2p
Exhaust and Induction first IMO.
Yeah sorry forgot that, mine already had both full stainless with no car, and induction kit fitted.
Strip the car completely. I've only got 280mm facelift brakes on the front of mine and they're OK with approx 370-400bhp per ton.
Same as Rob and Noz mention, I'm running Stage 2 and drive allot of mountain passes and track on just facelift 280's and Ferodo pads and never had brake fade or any of the horror-stories everyone keeps claiming about the stock brakes.
To be honest, investing in brakes first is a bit of a moral story...I'd first invest in a bucket seat and a decent harness if you want to control he car tons better and be safer in it. Remember allot of injury's are caused by excessive movement during a accident, which in a harness is dramaticly limited! Not to mention you will probably avoid an accident as you can use both hand to control the car instead of using only 1 as the other one is gripping something cause the stock seats suq
