    petrol fumes

why do you think everytime i roll down my window or open my sunroof, i can get a very strong smell of petrol fumes

I get a very strong smell driving around town and at standstill but i can still get it on motorway driving if i open either my window or sunroof. On long journeys i get headaches from the fumes

    There is no leakes.

    Regards,

    George.

I got this recently when I changed my fuel pump - turns out I forgot to replace the rubber seal around the fuel tank cover and vapour was escaping into the boot, opening the windows seemed to pull the smell into the front..

Pulling 1.45bar without problem, dont think it could be a boost leak.

This may be the problem. My apex elbow is bigger then my cat back system but it's not blowing or leaking that i can see and new exhaust gaskets were used when fitting last week. Would opening the window or sunroof make the smell worse if leaking from around the elbow? Im pulling 1.45bar so don't think i could be escaping from the exhaust, i would of thought i would not be able to hold boost if there was a leak anywhere

    Thanks all

I would guess that its your fuel tank O ring, or possibly the pipes coming off your fuel pump. mine did the same.

Is there not a pressure/vacuum relief valve on the S13 tank for when things get too much (even with a carbon cannister fitted)? If so, could that be jammed open?

(apologies for not knowing, can't remember what the service manual said, and the only car I looked closely at underneath had something that looked a bit like it might be one )

I fitted a new one when fitting the new fuel pump. That was a few months ago but has only started now.

I think it has started since fitting 740's and mapping it to 1.45bar but it's not running to rich and gives about 25/30 mpg which is about right for a thirsty CA IMO.

Exhaust fumes being drawn into the car via a badly sealed tailgate ? The CO would explain the headaches

Possibly, but seems to be closing properly. It didn't happen before when i had a twin exit mongoose but now i have changed to my exhaust system which has a 5" tailpipe.

Would it of happened before with the mongoose if it had a badly sealed tailgate or would it be more likely to happen now with the 5" tailpipe?

    Regards,

    George.

It depends on the airflow around the rear of the car and the angle of the tailpie i suppose
