broke within ten min of been back on the road grrr

had a proper shite day today already, and i think it might of been my own fault grrrrrr. today after completeing my topend rebuild with new turbo and such i was driving to have my exhaust made and fitted. nice gentle drive, no boost, 50mph max as its only one motorway junction up the road. cruising along, everything seems fine, temp ok no warning lights then sudenly a big POP..... enging cuts out, not running nothing.

pop the hood on the hard sholder and see that the cam belt cover is smoking quite alot and that the usualy red rocker covers are black at the front. due to the location i thought my new cambelt had snaped so had a look and it was still there, looks like it had skiped but in place. pull the dipstick and theres plenty of oil there, check the rad and pipes and theres water in them, open the oil cap, and it looked bone dry??????

im thinking that i may have fitted my cometic gasket the wrong way round? is this possible, is there a top and bottom?

grrr 3 weeks of work gone to waste and i havent even felt the boost of the new turbo yet.

spotted a white s14 while waiting for recovery tho

A pic of the engine would be a bloody site more helpful than a pic of a recovery truck

Is it a powdery black or an oily black From your description so far it could be the timing belt rubbing on the cover

head gasket on the wrong way, and cams have been welded stuck.

that's my 5 cent, try undo the cam cover and try if you can turn the engine with a big wrench

Gutted for ya - But on the upside I do have a head - done approx 15K miles since all valves lapped in and new valve seals - BUT exhaust valve burnt out on No. 2 cylinder. (UK SPEC though)

Id be very surprised if th HG is on the wrong way round as you would have a hell of a mix of oil and water and it would off gone on the run up bleeding it out etc
does this jog your memory at all

I think possibly the oil ways for the cam lubes are blocked or you have a major blockage in your head somewhere
did you have the head cleaned cleaned in any way?? and whats your oil pressure like?

also the japspec head will go straight on no worries just make sure you get the inlet manis as they are different and the 8 port gaskets are a pain to get hold of

no oil water mixing that i saw, temp was totaly fine, head was also cleaned at work in a chemical bath. upon inspection today i did find the gasket on the wrong way, i can even remember when it happend too as it was right then we had to lift the head back off and the gasket lifted up, i think we must of then put it back on wrong with the head held above it grrrr. ahh well we live we learn check out the damage
