I'm not quite ready to rip it out but it seems its spat its dummy out
The tirque converter doesn't seem to lock up right either that or its slipping, will a fluid change do anything at this stage?
Edit.. it has very little fluid in it!

Did you take fluid level hot or cold? You have to check gearbox level at normal operating temp and with engine running

No, the other one.
They seem to operate with surprisingly little fluid in there - apparently when mine came out it had half the amount it was meant to and it had the consistency of jet black treacle

Well......first I would stop driving the car due to incorrect oil level. Next, I would fill it to the proper level. Finally, I would see when the last fluid and filter change was. It will slip with lack of fluid in it the transmission or for that matter not shift at all.

low oil will cause problems
look up nenes guide to checking/chaging auto oil

do the stall test in the manual
if the oil is black it's fooked that will be the friction material from the brake band and clutch plates
