They're as rare as hens teeth now, But E12 M5's should fit your price range for a decent enough one
Ropey/in need of work ones are going for a couple of grand literaly (And I'll still kicking myself for not buying one - recon it would have cost as much to

tidy up as my 180 has )
There're under 100 left and the black ones are evil as

I'd go for the iconic Ur-Quattro

Older brother has had 2 of them, both were panther black

they sound gorgeous, quick for a heavy car & prices will probably rise in the near future.

Look at Mk1 & MK2 escorts, prices have gone up big time which has alot (not all) to do with historic rallying becoming more and more popular the last few years

The more people rally them then less are available and the few that remain will go up in price

Good Mk2 RS2000's were available for £2.5k in 2000-2001 now you can't get a good one for less than £4-5k

    £5500 to wet your appetite

I think the UR Quattro already is a classic. I saw a mint example go for £22K a couple of years ago.

Yup, it was one of the sport ones with only 20K miles on it. It had pride of place in the Audi showroom.

Looks like a Viva to me. Not bad though but the Mk 1 Manta is much prettier IMHO.

Oddly I was able to get classic insurance on the E28 I looked at but not the E12

I have to say that the E12's looks nicer (esp. in black) - they've got more of the 70's DTM/ETCC look about it

Anyone want to feel sick? Everything mentioned in this thread has at least doubled in value in 10 years, Im pretty sure youd struggle to buy a MK2 RS2000 for £4K too ........

Even the donkey RS2000 Mk6 Escort is worth a good few quid.

    Soo..
The E12 M535i I mention at the top of this page - 2k would have bought it in 2007.
That's what I payed for the 180 early the following year...

The only E12 M I can find today is at a dealer for 30k
And I've just found another sold example that was up for 30k too

At the time I estimated I'd need to spend another 2k on the car to get it upto scratch so bought a 540i instead

The 180 may be up over the last 10 years, but it owes me 20K+ in appreciation

My colleague's friend sold a mk2 Australian RS2000 with a irreparable engine for £11K last year. I suppose the body was OK, needed full respray though and all the rubber seals.

I remember nearly swapping my st185 gt4 for a Mercedes 190 cosworth and a grand back in 2005...

That would have made some cash now.... Oh well

And the price capris are fetching now, wish I'd got 10 when they were going through the local auction for £200 a go back in 1999

There I was thinking of selling my Z4M Coupe, think I'll just keep it in the garage now!
