On some of these abandoned sites you would have space for some "private testing" aswell

I just don't get why these places are abandoned. I thought available land was at a premium in Japan, so why don't they get levelled and new buildings built

I also assume they don't have the same levels of vandalism/street crime as we do here, as places like these would be covered in graffiti or burnt to the ground here

It's to do with ease of access.

lots of places shut just because people can't easily get to them / theres not enough else in the area to sustain itself.

I agree some of them look like they are in the middle of nowhere, but others are surrounded by apartment buildings, like this theme park
