Thumbs down F%ck. My GT28RS just died

    P!ssed off.

Just sorted the radio interference I had, car was all back together. Went to go and meet a friend, on the way car was running fine, then suddenly no boost whatsoever. Slowed right down and wound down the window and I could hear the turbo was fecked.

Spinning scraping sound. Switched off engine and as the turbo span to a stop you could hear it grating.

Just as the car was getting ready for Japfest, Silverstone and Le Mans

Turbo is only 2 years old and had about 20-25,000 miles on it.

Gutted for you My GT28RS didnt even last that long though. About 18,000 at the very most and it was totally beyond repair, I think we run them on their ragged edge.....

1.3 bar initially that used to drop off fairly quickly to the redline

I ran 1.3 all the way, but I had it set on 1.2ish for the last few weeks.

Didn't know that other people's had died too. Guess that's why you went for the upgrade Steve.
Don't want to lose the mid range thump by going too large, but wouldn't mind having a bit more top end buzz.

2871 will suit you just fine

Even my wife, who actually went to sleep on track at donington (including braking from about 140, and only woke when we went through the chicane and her head went clunk clunk thud ) now admits that the mid range thump can sometimes "get a bit too much"

Have you ever tried a 2871 without the poncams? Wondering if they are a bit more a necessity with this size turbo to keep some low rev range usability?

I just wonder what is killing them. Overspin or something else.

Me too. Strange that a standard T28 can last 100k at 1-1.2bar, but these are expiring in a far shorter time at just 1.3bar.

Wonder what the traders have in stock. Perhaps a 2871r plus some poncams.
This weekend could be very busy AND EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

I wander how much it would cost to get these failure investigated to see what is causing them

that's bad news... no wonder why when they repair the GT28RS they refuse to guarantee the work and call the turbo a 'race spec' unit

Sounds to me like the bearing are underspecc'ed for the turbo or something, which let go and allow the shaft to move too much - cause blade damage.

2871r is it for me when mine goes

I'm on my 3rd GT2871R and this one has now developed excessive play after only 11 months and 5k miles

Bren did send mine off to the Garrett dealer, they said it looked like it had had "a very hard life" with possible "momentary oil starvation at some point".

As I said last night it could be worse.

So this could explain what I noticed on Sunday?
