So what shall I replace it with I thought. A Mazworx SR could have been interesting route. Also love V8 sound and character, but I think I'd have wanted to twin turbo it, one thing would have led to another and before you know it I'd have been ready to star in an episode of Street Outlaws and probably developed the car too far for its own good. I would like a healthy amount of power but not at the expense of reliability and to some degree drive ability. I have always had a bit of a thing for an RB, especially a RB30, so I focused in and began my research.....
I considered a few in line six engines, the Barra seems quite interesting, but being a bit larger in size and most of the knowledge for it on the other side of the planet, and relatively new in comparison I think there are better options for me. Then there are the Nissans. Having had a holey time with my last Nissan block I was quite focused on block strength and looked at the RB20 RB25 RB26 and RB30 as well as the RD28 which seems a good starting point. Then by chance I happened upon a comparison of the 2JZ block and an RB30 block and it basically sealed the deal for me. More material thickness where needed (by double), larger and more oil drains, larger oil ways with more flow, shorter length and 10kg lighter block for block are some of the plus points I can remember right now.
Some time later....
What was the root cause of the CA lunching itself? Its quite a feat owning the car for as long as you have.
Finally broken cover. Nice
Jonny may have point, but I think I've chosen well for anti lunching ability. Lets see
Since that fitted picture was taken the engine had been in and out a number of times for further massaging. As the mounts are adjustable we tried to get it as far back as possible. Quickly maxed out the gearbox mount and had to make further mods to get it back to here
There is actually another inch or so left on the engine mounts and the new prop so it could go back even further with some firewall fab at a later date. Right now that is as good as its going to get.
With the costs slowly adding up I'm planning to get it running on the standard ecu and keep the twins initially which has presented a new set of issues. Twins or not the clutch master was never going back where it went and with the twins there was a brake servo clearance issue, so...
bit sad to see the CA go but it's replacement is very worthy ,I was tempted to go rb25 and got a engine cheap,
after me and my son struggled to get the block in the back of my mums honda jazz, we had a 3 hour journey home debatting CA v's RB
we decided to stay with the CA before we got home,
I like the idea of a big capacity engine so I have an idea to use a toyota engine in the future but not something many use,
stock CA sump is prime suspect imo for the failure
what gearbox you going to use?
Gearbox wise we have a CD009 of CD01 vintage that is internet rated to 900bhp.....apparently. A single plate clutch good for 670ft lbs is in between ready for a turbo swap down the line, so we will aim for that ballpark when its time for stage 1
That presents yet more problems. Tunnel massaging and lever relocation are already complete, getting a working speedo may require a bit more head scratching as there is no gearbox sensor, so will have to look at some other input be it abs or a custom prop or drive shaft solution. I've ruled out GPS atleast as a sole input as I like to know my speed when in tunnels
read this whole thread while having a slow day at work! its definitely been a bumpy ride but it's great to see the love that's went into this car.
hopefully i can get mine to this standard.. i just need a lot more knowledge first haha
looking forward to more updates and will hopefully see it in real life sometime!
Thanks
Progress has been slow but steady. Loom is basically done, engine has turned but not started just yet. I'm still not super happy with the engine and gearbox position, so decided to make some more adjustments to the tunnel, but have spotted a few rusty areas so will need to repair them first and add strength before cutting anything. Mounts have been added to the other chassis rail to run lines down that side so we can get the fuel system in place, and I spent way more than I wanted too on a front anti roll bar that fits

Its green
Now you are going to have to change the colour of other bits, glad its making some progress
Now just a man!
I'm so JDM that YouTube is targeting me with Japanese language adverts
Not much has been going on......anywhere recently.....but behold! An update!
My cage has been inside my car so long that it has started to go full Nissan

Can't have that!

On the face of it the firewall looked pretty good with a few small rusty bits
IMG-20210410-WA0010.jpg
But peel back a layer for fun and surprise! .....I mean rust

Promptly attended to
IMG-20210410-WA0022.jpg
So what do you do, once you make the firewall nice and solid again? Correct

Next shot is the engine and box back in with the mount that comes with the kit, note how low the box is relative to the chassis rails
IMG-20210410-WA0020.jpg
Dal worked his magic as usual , he relocated the original mounts further back which also allowed the use of a standard gearbox crossmember. Box is now at a more sensible height and the position is as far back as possible with the current Prop and mount configuration.

Not gonna promise an eta for the next update, who knows what might happen between now and then
Good to see it progress rather than sitting in the corner looking sad!
Looking good
