the C4 is 3-gear as opposed to the CA 4-gear. Any idea how this affects the drive ?
Yep it will affect speed and acceleration through gear ratios, I haven't decided on the diff setup yet...

Is there a big jump from 1st to 2nd or is 2nd in the CA like Ist on the C4 ?

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss japanese auto transmissions. Investigate the cost.
Can be more efficient and built quite strong.
Ivan on 240sx.com drove his glass/steel S14 thousands of street miles to events where it made low 9sec passes without nitros. No CA18 would match its output. Modified Z32 auto box, which looks near identical physically to the CA18 auto box, when I looked at them side by side.
Even if not for such extreme duty use, a lesser moded one may be an option.

For example, seen a 280zxt street car go 11.7s using its stock Jatco 4 speed auto, at only 23psi. Car weighed a heavy 3340 pounds. Owner and tranny rebuilder modified the box as per KEAS upgrade specs he told me

So what is the easiest/cheapest way to fit decent 600-700hp auto tranny to CA18? Z32?

300zx autobox is the same as ca18 auto box but the forward drive clutch drum is bigger in diameter and has an extra steel/friction plate, this means the top of 200 box is flat ish,300z has a hump on top of casing,300z box will take bit more bhp than 200 a/box but reguarly 300 boxs failed on stock power cars at 60,000 kms!!!!can be modded to handle more power, but i'd only go auto box for drags only use,and id use the 2 speed power gluide thats capable of 1000,s of bhp when modded properly (at huge cost tho),a ford c4 (427 ci/460 ci mustangs etc) or GM turbo 400 both 3 speeds and infinately modable can be better for a road use/daily/weekend drag car,a good auto box can be alot more forgiving on launch(4>5000 stall convertor etc) the slip effect of the fluid coupling can be tuned for peak torque at launch and minimises tyre shock loading for less sudden break away etc,but only for a pure drag car imho, worked with autoboxs for years, they have good points but i think they suck tramps c**ks lol unless the cars pure drags,i just like changing gear when i say!!!,unless you run them in manual shift for more involvement/fun,my twopence lol

I thought I would ressurect this one. I'm just wondering how long peoples standard boxes have lasted at 380-400bh@fly before? I think I'm starting to push my luck.

it really depends wether you are using that power often, on the lower 3 gears, and if you use sticky tyres.

Well my box has done about 10K so far since running 400bhp, 3rd-4th is where the problem usually lies but luckily I haven't had a complete disaster yet... saving pennies for a better gearbox! - about 250,000 pennies to be exact

Saying that most of the 10K has been cruising with no serious launches.....

    Cool. Cheers for the info.
2500 quid for a new box? That sounds a lot? Can't you get a giken for about a grand?

Yeah but I'm going all out and getting some serious parts, keeping the CA, currently redlining at 7700rpm but with a little more headwork upping that to 8500rpm, is basically going to be my own customised variant of Jez@HDev's s13 when he had the CA. Once happy with new box will be looking at bigger turbo and probably upgrading to a Syvecs management system.

Ive already thrown a tonne of money at it and will be throwing more at my Nissan money sponge over the summer

Yeah I know about the mazworx kit. I kind of refuse to pay that much cash for what is essentially a bit of CNC'd metal. LOL. I'm wierd like that but I think it's a rip off. I'd rather pay for the OSG.

Yeah OSG is about 1350ish but I cant remember if that is before or after tax, add labour costs and a new driveshaft into the mix and it touches 2500 comfortably

the OSG 5 gear + mainshaft kit is ~£2000 at the moment with the exchange rates available. if you wanted the uprated input shaft, that's yet more.

that's just craziness I recently sold my 700-hp capable 6-gear box with clutch and everything for the swap, for 1/3 of that
If I ever reach limits of CA gearbox, I would be thinking in this direction 6-speed close-ratio box with cheap rebuild kits. Would need adapter plate, custom clutch disc and probably custom DS, but worth it imho. 2500quid or almost 5000$ for a simple gearbox, f**k me
For 5000$ guys get boxes that let them do this:
