    Which Giken parts?

Just got the catalog from RB Motorsport and theres quite a bit of choice and confusion regarding the Giken gearsets.

I want a completely reinforced box, which I think is 5 gearset with input, main and layshaft.

    Heres whats in the catalog:

I think I know which one I need, but can anyone else point me in the right direction?

I *think* I need the £1,620 one - thats the 5 gear set with input shaft. Theres a picture too, that shows all the bits I want. I'm hoping they call the main shaft (i.e. the really long one that drives the prop shaft) a counter shaft...

The 3 or 5 gear set (if a different ratio) has to come with the layshaft doesn't it, it won't mesh otherwise. Even if the ratios were the same it'd be bloody noisy and not stronger.
Then the input shaft an extra £400 or so?

Oh, looking at this picture, it's the second thing up from the bottom isn't it?

    LOL feck, I'm confused now.

Mainshaft is the long one that goes to the prop, the counter shaft is the one that is driven by the input shaft drive and counter rotates to the direction of the input and mainshaft and has 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear hobbed out of it. A reinforced one is essential because of the number of keyways that are getting broken.

See if they do harder woodruff keys.

Bren was asking essentially the same question on Friday, I can't find the info this instant but its around.

Thats how I understood it too.

It may come with an uprated woodruff key - can't really tell. Looks like it comes with a different bearing of some sort.

    Heres a pic:

    this is a bit insane,

what's the difference between the bottom two sets?
just that you get a choice of 5th gear ratios?

Odd that, I think the bearing ID of the countershaft is a 'normal' size (in relation to the OD) so I wonder what they've done there.

You see this is where I win, I get "The Fear" just thinking about buying parts like that so I dont actually have to part with money to reap the misery.

    This is annoying me now.

Do I need the £1620 one, with no mention of an uprated mainshaft (although it is in the picture) or the £1585 with no mention of uprated countershaft Want both really...

Stupid question but have you asked Rod?

I wasnt aware there were any options other than:

    3 or 5 gears
    with or without main shaft
    5 gear ratio

Have you tried calling Rod Bell? They will tell you for sure, and if your spending close to £2K with them I think they ought to give some pre-sales service.
You don't need the uprated mainshaft to build the box, but then your tail splines are likely to shear off.

If budget is the issue then you might want to consider the 3 gear set and using a good S14 5th - there is no torque mutliplication on this gear so its less likely to fail - which maybe reflected by the way they sell 5th as an option. The uprated countershaft has to be part of the kit as it has the drive gears for 1st, 2nd & 3rd. The uprated input shaft could potentially be dropped but I've heard of these bending under the load of a powerful engine.

Also when you ask make sure that you find out the size of the input to mainshaft bearing, the S14 one is bigger, which is what you want as its less likely to flex and let the 3rd gear mesh seperate.
