Ok, i'm looking to service the beast myself, so need engine, box and diff (no lsd unfortunately..) oil recommendations.oh, and prices...
For the engine a good 5w-40 BMW approved synthetic, such as the Fuchs Titan Supersyn or the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

For the gearbox the Fuchs Titan Sintofluid http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-981-fuch...ion-fluid.aspx

For the diff the Castrol SAF-XO 75w-90 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-737-cast...lubricant.aspx

    That should cover it

    hey oilman

What oil would you suggest for a Turbo B16A2?

Forged rods and pistons etc, unsure of exact running temps but into the 90c's
    No oil cooler as yet.

    Cheers

Hi, may I get your advice?
What will be good summer oil for daily-driven CA18 running ~360Hp on dragstrip quite often? I have choice of Mobil, Valvoline, Motul and Castrol here in Latvia, no other brands.
P.S. Daily-driven means lot of short trips, with temps in the morning now a 1-3C, and in the summer we have up to 30C
    Thanx in advance

I would go with the Motul 300v, awsome stuff. 15w-50 if you track it a lot and drive it hard.

10w-40 if you do more town/fast road work.

    Cheers

So 10W-40 is not too thick from the cold start at +5C?

I would go with a decent 5w-40 synthetic, most go for the ester based Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Not as good as 5w but still fine. You could go for the 300v 5w-40.

Thanx, oilman although I must admit that because of price I've got Motul 8100 5W-40, hope it's not too bad?
Chrono 10W-40 would cost me 57GBP for 4 liters...

Would you happen to have any advice on ATF and it's temperature tolerances?

Specifically regarding it's use in a Jatco RE4R01A, as fitted to S13s (and S14s and NA Z32s), attached to an engine with a stage 2 setup. Use is a mixture of lots of motorway miles with spirited A and B roads in between followed up with just some pottering around.

    What is the required spec?

I've seen short peaks to 90C today, and whilst it was warm it wasn't what I would call "hot" today, so there is obviously the possibility of it going higher.

Advice I've seen on mostly American sites is the much quoted, but seemingly never justified "every 20F over 175F halves the life of the ATF" and since 175F is 79.5C that's a cause for concern.

    What are your thoughts?

Edit: ... or did you mean Dexron III?

I meant DIII type thing but with regards to quality, assuming specs are met you need a proper synthetic shear stable one which will stay in grade.

A few here to look at (as I say assuming specs are met DII, DIII etc)

Yes, the gearbox needs Dexron III spec fluid.

Is breakdown likely to be a problem at the temperatures the ATF will be seeing? If the oil does shear down and lose viscosity at higher temperatures, then that's a bad thing. Auto boxes depend on the viscosity being inside expected values because they regulate the hydraulic line pressure based on a series of assumptions rather than actually measuring it. The line pressure is what dictates how the various clutches are applied - too low means the clutches slip and wear, and create more heat from friction as well as putting debris into the fluid.

That looks like it only meets DII, however the service manual is unclear on whether DIIE is acceptable or if it has to be DIII.

OK, this look pretty promising. It doesn't seem to have a spec sheet though for some reason?

This don't meet the spec I'm afraid, but the datasheet lists Redline "Synthetic High-Temp ATF", though I can't see it on your site. Any ideas?

By the way, I'm likely to need a substantial quantity - the standard gearbox takes 8 litres, mine will need more because of the additional cooler, and I want to do an intermediate flush (thus double the quantity) so I can change all the fluid without taking the torque converter out. Got any help for me there?

    Thanks Simon

    Ahh, DIII good.

Personally I would take a closer look at Amsoil, you should find all you need about its performance here, we recommend it in hard applications

    http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/...ion_fluid.html

Our Members price is £13.05 per litre (rrp is £14.50) for 8-10L could do another 10% off, this is 20% off the normal price
