    Make : Nissan
    Model : 200sx
    Year : 1997
    Engine Size : 2000
Engine Type : SR20DET, 16v Ball bearing turbo
Any Mods : Listed in my sig below, Oil catch tank fitted..... Running 280 - 300 bhp
Type of driving (track or just road etc) : Used daily, as many short journeys as long ones, fairly heavy right foot, important - OCCASIONAL HEAVY DRIFT ABUSE...

The oil you currently use (make and grade) : Silkolene proS 10-50

Hi oilman, i've been a member of your site for a while now and have been making regular oil changes using the above listed oil. But have been reading the spec of the Silkolene proR 15-50 and was wondering which i should be using in your opinion. I am going to be at drift events at least once a month and the engine will take a hammering . But don't want to lose cold start protection.

    Thankyou for your time,
    Jon

    Jon,

The 10w-50 is fine for drift use as well and that is what I owuld suggest you stick with.

    Cheers

    Dez,

If you are going to be drifting look at the following. Engine = Silkolene Pro S 10w-50. Gearbox = Silkolene Syn5 75w-90, Diff = Silkolene BOA90ls.

    Cheers

The Mobil 1 is fine and quite good stuff. In the warmer months go for the Mobil 1 15w-50 as due to the small viscosity gap will be more stable under hard use.

Hello, I'm a regular user of Silkolene pro S 10/50 which I now swear by but I'm having problems getting it up to temp now its started getting cold. On my daily drive to work (approx 25 miles at around 60mph) its taking about 10mins to get it up to 65deg C (150deg Fahrenheit). At full running temp towards end of 35/40 min journey its at 74deg C (165deg Fahrenheit) and can only get to 80deg C (176deg Fahrenheit) on odd occasions when excellerating.

I'm worried this is too cold to be running the oil, I stay up in Scotland and its gonna get colder! Would running a thinner oil help? I'm also planning on doing a few winter trackdays but the car is used for commuting also. Its a stage 2 s13 CA18DET and is coming up for 60,000miles on the clock. Was considering mixing 10/50 with 5/40 if this would help get a good compromise?

    Thanks for your advice,

    Dunc.

    Dunc,

The 10w-50 will be fine, however if it is going to get colder try the 5w-40 and see how it goes.

Whats the suitable operating temps of the 10/50 then? Because it basically doesn't get above 165 Fahrenheit when at sensible speeds.

    Cheers,

    Dunc.

Modern engines do not need a 60 grade, it's really too thick and, even hot-running engines do not need SAE 60 oil these days. (by ‘hot’ I mean 120-130C). SAE 60 is heavier than most SAE 90 gear oils. If an oil is too thick, it de-aerates slowly, leading to cavitation in the oil pump, or the bearings being fed slugs of air along with the oil.

The thickness of the oil will also have an effect on the cars performance.

As many of you will be aware, I sell the likes of Mobil 1 15w-50 Motorsport, Castrol RS 10w-60 and the Silkolene PRO S and PRO R Ester Range so I have plenty of oils to choose from.
So if 60 grade is not suited for trackday oil, then what is the application they are intended for.

Certain engines, such as some alfas, some bmw m-series etc.

Endurance racing, 24hr type stuff and extreme temps, 150 degc and above.

    Cheers

Hi Simon i was wondering if you could give me some help and advice.
I am currently running 5w30 semi synth in my 1995 200sx with air filter full exhaust and 0.9 bar boost. I will be changing to your oil at the next change probably 10w40 unless you recommend another. Can you advise if the current oil i have is ok just for the moment as i would hate to do any damage. Currently at 80mph in fifth (sorry rev counter broken) the oil pressure is 70 psi and oil tem sits at around 75 deg. Flat out in third the oil pressure will reach about 110psi at the limiter. Does this sound ok.
Sorry for so many questions just dont wanna kill the motor just yet
    Thanks

    Nath

The oil will be fine for daily use but wont be up to any hard use really as it will start to break down.

At next change I would look at 5w-40 synthetic.

    Cheers
