It should be fine, the 5w-50 will need changing more often then say the 10w-50, the viscosity gap is so large its at the limit of stability, in order to achieve this they prop the oil up with viscosity index improver to keep the oil in grade throught the temp range, is this large amount of VI improver that keeps the engine quiet.

Its not in the same league as the Silkolene but change often it will be ok.

Would it be the same for me too? I have a '96 N reg with 60k that is just a road car (Does get driven hard at times!). I have stage 1 mods. (Exhaust inc manifold, air filter, fmic, Gt28r turbo, fuel pump etc...) Also im going to be changing the clutch soon so could you suggest gearbox and diff oil aswell. Thanks!

Ok, if you want stuff from the Motul range look at the 300v 15w-50 for the CA18det.

For the CRX a 5w-40, either the 300v 5w-40 or the Motul 8100 5w-40.

Can you recommend an engine oil as its got 106,000 on the clock, (using magnatec at the mo) and a gearbox oil (just had to put another box in after it melted 3rd and 4th).
I'm under the assumption that the LSD oil in the diff is the same as the g/box oil?

As top options go for the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for the engine, and the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 for gearbox and diff.

Hi oilman,

I drive a Toyota Corolla AE86 and just rebuild an engine for her. It will be a last generation 16V with slightly bigger compression but most of the other stuff kept stock.

Make - Toyota
Model - Corolla GT AE86
Year - 1987 but the new engine is late 1991
Engine Size - 4A-GE (red-top, MAP sensored version, 1587ccm)
Engine Type - N/A
Any Mods - slightly bigger CR apart from this stock
Type of driving - used mostly for drifting with the stock oil cooler. Used in winter and in summer as well.

I live in Hungary so the winter temps are mostly -5 to 5°C and the summer temps 20-35°C. I can buy Castrol, mobil and Motul and some other brands too for sure but I don't really know them.

Please tell me your oppinion about the best spec oil for the stock LSD (clutch-type) as well.

Hi,

For the engine I would have a look at the Motul 300v range, the 5w-40 would suit if the engine/oil temps remain below 120degc, if not you will need to go for the 15w-50.

For the diff, sticking with Motul have a look at the Motul 90pa.

The Motul and the Silkolene Pro are on a par quailty-wise it's just a case of whether you wish to pay more for the Motul.

my car is a 1989 200sx ca18det about 100000 miles. it has a few mods but not much... i drive the car to work and it does about 30-40 miles a day (sometimes rather hastily). i might do track days when the car is sorted (i just got it...) its a bit noisy (top end) so im going to do an oil change. what is a good oil for my car that is not too expensive? thanks

Used for thrashing arround her majetys highways Max oil temp ive seen is 110 after chasing a subaru fast. generally just go gently to work and back, about 30 miles per day see about 90max temp.

I've been using silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for the last 5000 miles and it's looking pretty black in there now so probably time for a change even tho' I was going to hang it out for another 1000 miles. Now that winters coming should I go to something a bit thinnner. or stick with that rather than chop and change from summer to winter?

Is there any way to tell how much your oil has sheared? so you know when to change it?

I assume BMW's with the intermittent servicing have some gismo to do this or do they purely go on engine conditions i.e. how much it has been loaded and for how long ect?

I would stick with the 10w-50, it is fine for winter use.

If you take some oil from the dipstick and rub it between your fingers, if it feels gritty its had it, if it smell burnt change it and if it smells of fuel, change it.

If it is black it just means its doing its job.

Hi do members get some kind of discount off your online price as I'm failry sure I can get exactly the same Silkolene 10w-50 cheaper from apex? plus i get an oil filter and a new drain plug all for slightly less than oil and filter (all be probably a better filter than a Std Nissan one) on your site?
