Oilman (Simon/Guy),
What is the optimum operating temperature for motor oil and what tolerances does it work best between?
I'm asking as I've fitted an oil cooler and my temps are way down, I'm worried they might be a bit too low now
***
***, the optimum is between 90 and 110, it will work happily lower and higher than that. Richie Beaumont has seen temps of 145 and the oil is still going strong.Originally Posted by *****
How low are your temps?

The oil will be fine at those temps. You will find most cars out there will sit at around 90deg as normall. We have been doing some lengthy chatting on the Skyline register about the need for oil coolers. Unless you are in constant competition use or are running huge horses there does not seem to be much need as the modern top oils are good as a coolant plus they can also function at much more extreme temps when the engine is pushed.
looks like you will just have to keep booting it

Oilman,
I want to change my engine, gearbox and diff oil. The cars a 98 S14a with exhaust, induction, boost upgrade (15 psi) and fuel pump, 70,000 miles. Was 219 bhp standard so around 250 bhp now. The car is used mainly for travelling to work, and driven (fairly) hard sometimes, Im also gonna start drifting it every month or two hopefully as well. It was serviced by Nissan up to now, so its currently using whatever they put in it, What oil would you recommend?
Thanks
Jules

For the care we would recomend the Silkolene range. For the engine the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 or 5w-40 ester based full swynthetic.
The gear box and diff we recomend the Silkolene Syn 5 75w-90 for both the gearbox and diff.
E-mail me for prices. Quick because they go up at the end of the month!!

The only reason I'd fitted a cooler was the 125c temps I was hitting at Castle Combe in the summer (at Japfest)
I'm probably going to lag the cooler over the winter months and leave it as it is then (sticking with the 10w 40 Pro-S).
Cheers for the info

ok how's this for a weird question...
recommend me an oil please...
Car: 1974 Vauxhall Firenza Droopsnoot
Engine - 2279cc Slant Four
Flowed head (running unleaded) hotter cam, running 160ish bhp, car will have some gentle short journeys, but also hope to be using it on track - oil cooler currently disconnected (because it ran too cold on the road) but will be connected with thermostat oil feed in future
Engine will have been rebuilt - so obviously will be running in, after that what should i run it on?
Simon, what’s the shelf life of the Silkolene? I have stocked up a bit and wondered if it will be OK for a couple of years?
Thanks
Pete

Dear Mr. Oilman
Have engine oil and filter change due (every3000 / six months).
Car does approx 5000 miles per year. (i.e. usually changed twice per year)
Only usually used for short journies and fast road use. (i.e. not used as track vehicle - although considering in the future)
Producing approx 300bhp
Currently using Mobil Supersyn 0W-40 Fully Synthetic.
Your comments and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I have heard elsewhere Motul oils are very good too. Something I was wondering, I note under this page http://www.opieoils.co.uk/ENGprods.htm it says alongside each Motul oil "Engine fuel dilution" with a low, medium or high rating. What does this mean exactly?
Do you have prices for the Motul range if I e-mail you?
Cheers
